What is the exact make and model of computer?

Can you boot into Safe Mode? (repeatedly tap the F8 key after the BIOS POST or computer Logo screen before Windows).

A Dell Optiplex ????? (letters ... numbers) 160L? E1? GC? GX? NX? etc.

Anyway at the Dell site plug in your model and search for Operating System reinstall/repair etc.

    http://support.dell.com/

If this is a new problem from the Safe Mode Option screen choose Last Known Good Configuration.

    Search Criteria
    Dell System: OptiPlex GX1
    Operating System: Windows 2000
    Component Category: Operating System

    http://support.dell.com/support/topi...SRG&l=en&s=dhs

All Dell systems factory-installed with Windows 2000 ship with the Dell-branded operating system reinstallation CDs. This CD is not an image restore CD; it is the Windows 2000 Professional Installation CD.
So you say that you did not get this disk?

Did you try Last Known Good Config ... ?

You could also try Safe Mode with Command prompt and run CHKDSK

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk/f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

You can also run this via Safe Mode proper.

You can also view your Event Log in Safe Mode via

    Start/Run/ eventvwr.msc

Also view your Error Log via:
    [1] Start Menu
    [2] Help and Support
    [3] Pick a Task
    [4] Tools
    [5] Advanced System Information
    [6] View the Error Log

There is very little that you can do without the Operating System disk but the above might show something.

no I don't have original disk,

like I said computer was sold to us used, one of those businesses that were upgrading

anyways is it possible to use Windows professional 2000 upgrade and do either a clean install or repair from that disk?

I really don't know much about computers, just learning as I go. Thank you so much.

A Windows professional 2000 upgrade CD would be fine if you know your Product Key.

All Windows Cd's are essentially the same: they just need your Product Key.

The difference with an Upgrade CD is that it requires proof of a previous version of Windows.

If you do a repair install it will see your current version and run off it.

In order to do a clean install you would need another version of Windows CD e.g. '98 to prove that you had a previous version. That is why upgrade Cd's are cheaper but otherwise they are the same disk.

Belarc shows you all your licence numbers (keys). You should be able to run it in Safe Mode:
