Sorry mat12 but I'm having trouble understanding what you mean. When you switch your PC on, does it only go to a black screen with a couple of bits of white writing on, with the cursor flashing next to a line that simply says C:> ?

If so, are there any error messages displayed?

Has this PC been working normally in Windows recently and just started having the problem?

Is the PC asking you to type in a code somewhere?

OK, I think I understand what's happening now

When you get to the black "DOS" command window, it doesn't actually say on the screen "Please type in a code" or anything like that, it just says "C:>" and the cursor is flashing waiting for you to type in a command. You expect the command that you need to type in to be something like "Start" or "Run" or "Load" or "Open Windows" or something like that so that Windows will load and you can see your desktop screen that has the Windows Start Menu and the icons for all of your programs. Am I correct?

OK, on the assumption that I've understood what's happening, could you please type DIR and then press Enter or Return on the keyboard. That should list everything that is on the C: drive (the hard disk). What we are particularly interested in are the entries that say <DIR> next to them. Could you please list all of those entries for us?

Finally, are you expecting Windows 2000 to be on this PC or are you unsure about what is on it?
