New USB external hard drive enclosure not recognised.

I have bought a Speeze GigaPod (CF100-NEB) external HD enclosure to connect the hard drive from my dead xp computer to my old windows 98 machine I am running now. I can hear the HD working but it will not show up in my computer. I think the problem is that it is not installed. It is plug and play for later versions of windows but there is a cd that came with it for 98 - the problem is, the read me file just says:

"If this is first time you use USB2.0 External Drive, you have to run the [SETUP.EXE] from USB2.0 install CD before you connect your USB2.0 External Drive to computer.
1.Insert you USB2.0 install CD in your CD-ROM.
    2.Open the Install CD.
3.Run the ¡°SETUP.EXE¡±to install drivers for your USB2.0 External Drive.
4.Choice the setup component and click ¡°NEXT¡±.
5.The system will request you to restart your computer now.And Click on [FINSH].
6.After the system restart, the install is completely.
You can connect your USB2.0 External Drive to computer now."

but there are 8 'setup.exe' files in seperate folders with names that mean nothing to me! They are 510u, 510ui, Card Read, Fi310, Fi320, Fu210, Fu310 and Fu320. I used the one in the Fi310 file and it did say 'USB to IDE installation' or something but it didn't ask to restart and the HD is not installed (there is an unknown device if I click add hardware). The Speeze site is no help and doesn't have drivers and I can't find one anywhere else! Do those folders mean anything to anyone?!

Also, I just wanted to check that a drive formatted in XP will be picked up by 98. Also is there something else obvious I might be doing wrong like the jumpers on the drive (although I have tried no jumpers, set as master, slave and cable select!). Of course it is also possible that the drive was killed by the virus that killed the pc...

    Hi Retro,
In answer to the first part of your question; I believe you need to be on Win98SE in order to use USB2.
    If you are, try this:
Go to device manager and double click on the device that isn't working - it will probably have a yellow triangle or question mark next to it.
In the dialogue box that opens, choose "driver", then choose "update driver".
You'll now be asked for a location to look in.
Put the driver CD in your cdrom and point the "look in" at that drive.
This will let the system choose the best driver for that device.
    In answer to the second part of your question;
In order to make your discs formatted under WinXP recognisable in Win98SE, you must format them as FAT32 and NOT as NTFS which is the default for XP.
If you are on Win98, then you must use FAT16, but Win98 can only work on USB1 so your drive will be unusable anyway.
    HTH.

Thanks for the reply. It was 98SE but I needed to get files from the drive so couldn't reformat it. I connected it to an XP machine and it recognised it straight away so I'll just have to get a new PC and connect it to that!

    Hello -

My problem is somewhat the opposite of the one posted here. My apologies if it is inappropriate to piggyback like this on another problem; I'm new to the community.

I have a vintage 1995 Win95 box with two drives in it (Western Digital Caviar 31600). I need to get some files off of both drives, so I bought an external USB2 enclosure, installed one of the drives, set it to master (per the instructions with the enclosure) and connected it to a new XP Pro machine. The XP machine "knows" that the drive is there, but I can't see it in Windows Explorer. Nor are any volumes listed when I look at the properties of the device.

I suspect that I've overlooked some obvious step, but I can't find anything in the instructions to guide me.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    david
