I have an old Gateway gps-300 computer with 5 gig hard drive. I was going to give it to my daughter but it needs help to work. Should I spend $ on rebuilding it or just buy her a new computer.

She will be using it for computer games, educational games, internet. Right now it is super slow, the cd player freezes and it has a 5 gig harddrive. I know I can buy a basic computer with cd/dvd and 40 gigs for about $500. Is that a better way to go and trash this one. If I could revive it with a larger hard drive and get the cd player to work!......and by the way I always hated window 98.
Can it be done for about $100. thanks
