Win 2000

I'm looking for any help please, I haven't changed anything that I'm aware of anyway, I have up to date virus protection and run a registry repair programme regularly. The problem is that the command 'new' (as in folder), has disappeared from the right click menu and the file menu. I imagine it is something simple but I have been trying everything I can think of for the last couple of hours without any luck. I remember installing an automatic windows update yesterday when I first went online, but thought no more about it.
