I need some help in getting started on rebuilding my old gateway computer. I was going to purchase a book to help me out, but thought that starting here would not hurt me any. So does anyone have any suggestions? This is my first time and I think I consider myself to be a little computer savy .... so please help

Rebuilding in what way? Are you trying to replace faulty hardware components or upgrade some with newer components? Or do you mean "rebuilding" as in wiping all the software off and re-installing Windows and your applications again to speed it up?
