    PC shuts down during startup

Hi - I have a P3, 733Mhz, 384MB RAM PC, and I'm running Win 98SE. I've been noticing recently that my computer has occasisionally been locking up, almost randomly, but usually while online. Today it locked it, and I tried restarting it, which usually gets Windows running again. But this time during the restart, after all the drivers loaded and at the point where I would normally be asked for a user name and password to get into Windows, the computer mysteriously turns itself off. I've tried restarting a number of times, but the PC turns itself off at the same point every time now during startup. I can get into Windows via Safe Mode though. Any suggestions on what the problem could be or what I could try to help diagnose the problem? Thanks a bunch!

    James

    Hello and Welcome to D-A-L.

Start in Safe Mode and run SFC. (System File Checker) Extract a new copy of Wininit.exe into c:\windows. Restart to see if the problem is fixed.

    Post back with your results.

Dan - Thanks for your reply. I've upgraded to XP, which has fixed the problems.
