Solved - Windows 98 Crash

Re: Windows 98 Crash
Thank you for the compliment. (Heh, tell my boss.) ;>)
Try what I've outlined in this posting (reply # 30).

Thanks Dan,
But there isn't a Display listing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ==> Enum!
There is one, however, under HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.
You're absolutely welcome for the compliment, by the way. I can see why you Canadians like to distinguish yourselves from your southern neighbours. ;-)
Back to you,

"... there isn't a Display listing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE ==> Enum!"
Hmmmmmmm....................
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Display?
Feel daring enough????? ;>)
No matter what, a display adapter will load.
OR, if you have drivers for the other three cards you just reinstalled, you can delete the above HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Display entry, ALONG WITH the entire Enum sub-key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
"I can see why you Canadians like to distinguish yourselves from your southern neighbours. ;-)"
;>) Actually, I'm an American. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I enlisted in the U.S. Army at 17 (with my parents authorization signature). Spent a year and a half in Germany learning how to drink good beer, ;>) then when I turned 18 I received my orders for my "vacation" in sunny Southeast Asia. I'm one of the weird ones up here, I came to Canada after my tour in Viet Nam. Most other Americans (my age anyway) came here came before they were ordered to go.
I was very young, 19, and had lost a bit of trust in the U.S. government, based upon "experiences" during my "vacation". I made a (young and snap) decision, ended up marrying, have two children (son and daughter, both grown now), and the rest is history.
But I still like to distinguish myself. ;>)

Hi there,
Thank you very much for the intriguing insight into your personal life story and I apologise for my erroneous assumption about your heritage. Given the way you describe your time in the U.S. Army, I am sure you have some strong thoughts about what's happening in the world at the moment.
Sadly, I must return to talking about much more prosaic matters...
I ended up the more severe of your two suggestions and deleting the entire Enum sub-key. The drivers reloaded as expected but nothing really fell into place as far as the graphics were concerned. The only difference that I have noticed is that I have been able to get it to take different colour profiles which have offered both 256 Colours and True Colour (as well as the 2/16). However, whenever I restart the computer to apply the new settings in anything other than 2/16, the computer tells me that there are problems with my graphics setteings and that they are not compatible with my hardware. The only other thing is that the Display settings icon is now loaded into the taskbar at startup.
Sorry the news wasn't a bit better.
Thanks,
Operaboy.

Sorry to be away for so long.
Try this set of drivers for your video.
Download, unzip to an empty directory. Go into Device Manager and expand the display adapter to get to the Properties, Driver etc. Point to the directory where the files are located.

Sorry Dan,
It was the same story with the latest driver you sent - no luck. Under Display Adapters it lists both S3 and a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter and whenever the S3 is listed, the Standard Adapter reports a hardware conflictwith S3. There is also a recurrent conflict under System devices with an apparent double-up of a direct memory access controller. I've tried removing one but it always seems to return.
Back to you.

Sorry for the delay. I've just done a clean install of 98SE and Win 2000 Pro on my main machine, plus I've been in bed with a nasty flu for the last three days.
Just to clarify, there is no seperate video card in this machine, correct? All video is "on-board video"?
Open regedit. Remove/delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Display key. Exit regedit. Open Device Manager and remove both display adapters. Shut down the machine and go pour yourself a coffee so the RAM bleeds off. Reboot. When the system starts, if it gives you the opportunity, direct it to the last driver package directory where you have the files saved.
If it does not give you the opportunity to specify the drivers, go through Device Manager/Display adapters/Properties/Driver to update the drivers. If there are two adapters listed, delete the one that is NOT S3 prior to the driver update.
Once the "new" driver package is installed, it ~may~ give you the means to enable the AGP status as "Enabled" for the AGP Controller.
I'm back and waiting....... ;>)

Hi Dan,
I'm sorry to hear you were unwell. I hope you're feeling better now.
Here's the story. As far as I can tell, the video is on-board only (no evidence of a separate card). In your absence, I tried a bit of amateur sleuthing which included deleting both the standard VGA listing and the S3 listing that were under display adapters in Device Manager and succeeded in losing the S3 listing completely upon reboot so I will need in finding that again before we can continue with getting the right drivers onto the computer. I am also having hardware conflicts as I have mentioned before in other parts of the computer but I can't seem to do anything that will make the computer take the video drivers. As I also may have mentioned previously, there is no Display listing under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Enum yet there is one under HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG so I deleted that and did the usual reinstallations. However, I still didn't find anything remarkable unlocking or presenting itself as a ripe opportunity to get everything back into order. Sorry for the steady stream of second-rate fortune.
I really hope you haven't given up on me yet.
Thanks,
Operaboy.
