I have a 600 MHz computer Windows 98se which we gave to a student living with us. The computer's hard drive has been completely wiped annd reformatted and Windoew 98se reloaded with ALL the updates. In order to connect the computer to our home network, I loaded the Gateway 2Wire HomePortal software. Everything works great except when the computer is rebooted, the Homeportal icon disappears from the network devices and reappears as an unknown device under the USB controllers. Now here's the weird part, if I turn the computer off when it is turned on, it finds and installs the missing network connector and as long as the computer is turned completely off the network connection remains without the computer searching and re-installing it. Any reboot, and the network connection disappears and reappears as an unknown USB device, and I cannot load any drivers for it. But if I remove it (device manager) and turn off the computer and then turn it back on, it reinstalls and works perfectly. I've reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98se and all those &^%&^* updates and reinstalled the homeportal without any change. The other 2 network computers work fine, and this one did before it was replaced and wiped and reformatted, and added back into the network. Help please.
