Hi - a bit of a problem
downloaded direct 9x from ms web site today. when rebooted system found a big problem
System said 'please wait while setup updates your files......blah blah.
then message comes up 'Windows could not up date your files for %1 from %2' this message gets repeated and doesnt stop.

so i shoved in boot disk and ran scandisk and tried system restore (point set 5 days ago)
no joy get same evertime i try to re boot. cannot boot in safe mode or anything.

I'm wondering if replacing the system files is the next step?

if so a bit of advice on how to, would be great.

I just got a friends computer that is doing the same thing, its a compaq5000 and iam assuming that yours is also a prebuilt. Ive also done every thing you said you did and am going to try to do a none destructive system recovery. Also have noticed that when i tried to run scandisk that it says that the himem.sys is not loading which will be the next thing to check into if sys recovery does not work. Well if you come up withanything else let me know.

Right, i found that leaving the stupid thing switched on all night sorted the problem, but icontinued to look for a cause.

What it was is i tried to download direct 8 from ms web site and this update to system fils was the problem.

I found a possible solution on the microsoft web site which matched my problem exactly, however i havent tried it. Basically its something to do with windows restore and the update. If i find it again on the ms web site i'll post with a link if you still need it.
