    Scandisc/defrag hangups

I have a Pentium 433mhz older model w/DSL . Runs well accept for one problem. I can't scandisc or defrag unless I'm in safe mode, and then it's very very very slow. Like 4 hrs for scan disc to complete and defrag to complete. There's got to be a solution to this but I just can't find it. If anyone reads this and can help with this, much appreciated.

Why dont you try upgrading ur RAM? As for the defrag and running it in safe mode, its IS best run in safe mode so that no programs interrupt or write to disk at the time its running. Have you run a disk cleanup and cleaned out the trash, it wud help free up space and also make defrag a little faster. How much free space do u have?(atleast 15% needed for the built in). Also if u dont do it regularly, it will take that long.
Personally i would suggest you get a third party tool which runs much faster and does a good job too.
(be regular with the maintenance tasks such as cleanup and defrag etc).
