    Win2000 Administrator Login and WinUpdates

Hello, I am having a Windows 2000 update issue. Earlier this year, my pc suddenly stopped allowing me to visit the Windows Update website. I thought it was a virus and you guys helped me clean the garbage out. But, once cleaned it gave me a new message when I click the Windows Update link:
    "Run As Other User"
"You may not have the necessary permissions to use all the features of the program you are about to run. You may run this program as a different user or continue to run the program as JIM/Jim."
When I run as Jim, it says:
    "The page cannot be displayed"
I do not remember my administrator username or password.
When Windows starts up, the login screen appears, its populated with the Jim profile, but I do not enter a password. I do not know the admin username or password as I never set one up!!! I had been using the Jim as admin...it used to work! Now, it doesnt!!!!
    Other than reinstalling Win2000....any ideas?
Would upgrading to XP help? I wanted to do that anyway.
I just dont want to lose all my files and programs in a clean reinstall of Win2000.
    thanks,
    Jim

Perhaps try creating a new admin account.

If you never set a password pressing Enter at a password prompt should work.

2K will upgrade nicely to XP Pro as long as the hardware is sufficient.

Your data & programs should be unaffected by the upgrade.

This scan is a first step:

As Jephree says, if you haven't set up a password on the default Administrator account, then the password is just blank (assuming that this is just a home PC that came with Windows installed or you installed it yourself and it's not an ex-corporate PC).

Hi, sorry it took me so long to reply. I like to try to figure these things out on my own, but its taking a little too long. I dont know how to create a new account. I tried to seach google, and cannot find anything. Obviously, I'm not doing something right. LOL. I went to Users and Passwords in the Control Panel. I see 3 users in there.....Administrator, Guest, and Jim. I just rebooted and looked and see that Administrator is highlighted. I cannot switch between the 3. There is no password for Admin and I cannot change Password for Administrator.

Reboot the PC and, when it prompts you to enter your username or password or both, change your username from "Jim" to "Administrator". Leave the Password field empty. Click OK.

What happens? If it logs you in, then that's it - you're in under the Administrator account. If it comes up with a message box saying that you've entered the wrong password, then log in as "Jim" again and we'll see what else can be done.

omg I feel so stupid. haha, you have revealed the problem. When I would restart my pc, I would just click restart. That brings up the prompt box too quick for me to change login. When I logged off of Jim, I rebooted and was prompted to log in. I changed to Admin and logged in just fine with no password.
    thanks for all your help!!!!
    Jim

No problem Jim. A solution is often only obvious if you already know what the solution is!
