    poor "ME'

Hey there whats popping? Well I need some help with this windows. ME is such an issue to deal with.
Anyways how cna you tell help me to stop having some folders opening while I start up. Thee 'windows' and 'system' folders keep on opening up whenever I boot up.

Also, this pc I'm trying to doctor, its IBM 650mhz celeron and it has only 64mb memory(133mhz). Now when I put in a 128mb(100mhz) in it it booth up once, monitor and all seems ok, but thats it. never again. I keep getting all kinda errors. I take out the memory and replace the original 64mb and it boots up fine. Whats with that, does your ram affect your 'monitor' so to speak or is the the "ME" thats causing that?

Thanks alot, I'll be listening out.

    go to start/run msconfig

Look for these folders there & uncheck if found.

Did this just start happening? If so you can try a System Restore.

Just as a wondering why this happened you might post a HijackThis log in that section:
Please follow the instructions HERE & then post your log in a new thread in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and HijackThis Logs section.
    (Not in this section please).

As to RAM first off the speeds were different which would have dropped the 133 to 100. & may have caused other issues.
Also if they weren't the same brand that might have been an issue.
Have you tried the 128 alone?

    Wel Here I am again.

Did as you said, looked in the msconfig however that didnt help. When it opened I got a console with several headings...GENERAL...SYSTEM.INI...WIN.INI......STA RTUP...(and a cople more). Experimented abit in win.ini since there was a windows folder that was in there, unchecked it(no system folder was shown) it prompted me to reboot to effect changes and upon restarting I was prompted a msg saying "you are using the slective startup for troubleshooting your system"

I then checked back in msconfig under the general heading, 'load all files'(or something like that) was now unselected and "selective startup" was checked. All this because I had unchecked the windows file under the startup heading. So I went checking back to look at that windows file I unchecked (under startup heading)...and it was slected but greyed out.

Noting here that upon reboot after trying this, the windows folder and the system folder still opened after reboot and upon startup.

About the memory, I understand the speed could mess things up abit but thought it would be backward compatible since its just slowing down (to match the 100mhz) and not trying to speed up the bus to a speed it cant 'go up to' guess I was wrong. The brands were different, didnt think much of that though never came across that issue before. Its queer though since in my pc I have mismatched speeds (100 &133) since DIMMS are so hard to get...almost absolete (not to mention expensive) Technology movin too fast man!!! The only indication with my mismatched speeds is during startup the memory check is much longer as it does it bout 3 times or so...buthit escape and wala...bootup continues(skipping the momory test)

Didnt try to run the hijack this, the pc is too slow. It takes a while even just to open a folder, yet run a program...remember its 64Mb here. All this just trying to help my best friend and his computer woes. Untilhe can buy a new one..guess he's stuck with this dinosaur.... I actually wanted to install XP on it (since we all know that ME has issues) but wont chance it with 64megs...may be at if for the entire weekend and its gonna slow down even worst. First recommenadation to him..buy memory!

Since I'm typing, will ask thought this may not be the correct forum but cant bother to go start another thread(no disrespect to you ok) but why does my monitor flicker? I figure its going bad, correct? Now this is my second monotor so my question is can the system be damaging these monitors why they flicker then go bad on me so often? It just flicker every now and then and am looking to see it stop one day. I have a brand new video card too, that went sometime ago.

Thanks for reading my long thread, will check in with you tomorrow ok.
    Blessings plus tax everytime!!!!!

Sorry for incomplete instructions but I had meant to look under msconfig startup.

There is an issue similar to this for XP 2k & NT but doesn't mention ME:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;170086

In order for XP to run well you need a minimum of 256MB RAM.

I know of no way that the computer could damage the monitor. There may be settings & or drivers that need updating.

    Try Start/Run/ dxdiag | Display

Also try plugging the monitor into a different outlet than the computer. Check the refresh rate. Move away from any other appliances.

I would try to follow that link. Just backup your registry first:

Well problem solved...but in an indirect way.

Well I followed the steps on the microsoft link and during the save process the problem fixed itself.
For windows ME it instructed me to got to start>run and type 'scanregw' upon doing so a dialog box popped up saying its scanning the registry in order to save it. When the task was completed the computer rebooted itself. After it restarted the the 'system' and 'window folder' didnt come up.

My question to you is this what does the scanreg command does? does it just 'save' te registry or does it scan it lookin for errors (and correcting if it can) then saving the registry. what other instances or circumstances could thie command be used to help out a sitution. Also I note the procedure for saving the registry setings varies across the different o/s...xp..me..2000 etc.. does the "scanregw" command work across the board too? if not whats the command for the rest of o/s?

Sorry about the multitude of questions but I like fooling around computers but I love to know(and understand) 'how' I fixed it lololol

Thanks again but I'll be back soon (maybe in another forum) cuz I got 2more pc to look at and one has the infamous 'blue screen of death' and my friends are taking advantage of my addiction to pc's lololol

    Glad you got it going!

Description of the Windows Registry Checker Tool (Scanreg.exe)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/183887/EN-US/

Works for 98SE & ME. System Restore is similar & works in XP. Also XP has sfc /scannow if one has the full version XP CD.
XP also has a Recovery Console on the CD that covers most of the DOS commands.
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm

Also running chkdsk/f from a cmd prompt is usefull for disk repairs in general.

In 2K, as far as I know, one would have to manually back up the registry. Also:
