Sstem re-install fails -- driver issue here
I was having problems with my Laptop. Compaq 1230 running win 98se. Backed up the drivers to a Zip drive, reformatted, re-installed the Windows 98se system okay, but the driver files were not saved as it turns out.
So I have a system with a really crappy display, no modem, no pcmcia card for the wireless connection and apparently no network adapters.
This is an older system and having moved several times in the last few years I have no info about what all is actually installed, but I do know there is a modem and a network, etc there, however the system fails to find them.
So what to do? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Download Everest home edition (free) http://www.lavalys.com/products.php?lang=en Install and run it and it should tell you everything you need to identify sound, video etc.

THANKS.
I will install it tonight and keep you posted on the progress.

Well, it helped, but the system still has one 'unknown device'. And won't connect to the Internet. All the other basic functions seem to be operating okay. I have installed some software and am able to use the machine quite well for what is in there, but need to access the Internet to update some software, etc. and can't yet. I connect via USB and a Cable modem.
I found and installed the drivers for the video display, the pcmcia card, etc, but still do not know which device is unknown, so, still require some assistance.
What little information I have about the device is from the control panel > system > device manager > properties > resources > properties > set configuration manually path.
It says the drivers are not installed, the memory ranges (I/O ranges 0220-022F, 0330-0331, 0388-038B), the interrupt request info = 05, the Direct memory access is listed twice = 00, 05.
Any further assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

Has anyone looked at this lately?
I am still fighting this 'unknown device' and can't connect to the Interney with the laptop.
Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

More information about the model you have can lend to further help. I did find this on the HP site. (The previous screen offered many variations on the 1230 models.) Does anything apply?
It would also help if you could state what is NOT working in the hardware realm, ~if~ you know what is there in this system. ie; Is there a NIC card not working, a modem, etc. Some voice/FAX modems utilize the sound card for elements of the modem. If the voice/fax elements are not loaded, you'll get the "Unknown Device" in Device Manager.
