    Control Panel causing illegal operation

    Every time I try to open Control Panel I get the following:

    EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
    module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7a138.

    I have run sfc to repair system files and have restored control.exe from installation disks.

    I can run all of the control panel applets by creating shortcuts to all of the *.cpl files and placing them in a folder from where I can access them. They all appear to work correctly.

    Thanks for any help that you can give.

    David Wright Sr.

    P.S. I have run AdAware, Spybot, A-Squared, Symantec Corporate Version 8.0 anti-virus, all with latest updates and have checked hijackthis log, but have seen nothing which would appear to be a problem.

    Is your c:\windows\control.ini file intact? It should look similar to;

    [don't load]
    snd.cpl=no
    joystick.cpl=no
    midimap.drv=no
    sticpl.cpl=no

    [MMCPL]

    Thanks. Yes, it looks ok and I tried renaming control.ini to something else. (came across this somewhere else) and it still bombed.

    However, something just popped, (no pun intended),into my mind and I recalled that I have been having trouble with panicware's pop-up stopper, so I stopped it and tried again. It worked!

    I will remove and re-install pop-up stopper and see if that fixes the problem permanently.

    Again Thanks.

    That did it. Removing Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper and re-installing got rid of the problem and Pop-Up Stopper is working correctly.
