    Login w/o username or password

    Hi,
I am the only user of a computer at home which has Win 2000 Pro as the OS.
I would like to be able to Boot-up, Restart, etc. without having to sign in with name and password etc., but I do want to make sure that all file use permissions and et. al. are set to allow useage, in the event I want somebody else to do something for me, without having to log-in.

    Am I making sense?

I am currently using Win ME on the computer I using right now, and I don't have to sign in or anything.

    Is this possible?

    Thanks.

That should be easily solved for you Clayton. Go into Control Panel (Start Menu > Settings) and double-click the Users icon. There should be an option for all users to use the same settings. Switch that on. Reboot and, voila, no login prompt.

Bear in mind that, when you do that, it will probably delete each Windows user's profile. That means that anyone that has logged on to the PC (e.g. you) and saved files into their My Documents folder or to the desktop will lose those files unless they are saved somewhere else before making the change.

Let us know if that resolves your issue

Umm... I would recommend that you use the DefaultUserName and DefaultPassword settings rather than risking removal of any user profiles.

Like altering system files, modifying the registry can be risky and D-A-L.com and its members cannot accept liability for any adverse effects caused by following advice freely given on this site.

DJNafey is correct. Take extreme care when altering anything in the system registry and be sure to backup critical data first.

Thanks Waylandbill - glad I didn't 'put your back up'. I don't dispute your answer as a good solution but, as a moderator, I have to make that standard statement every time I see someone talk about the registry!

Thanks for the Replys. I have solved the problem...by switching to Win XP Home. So far, not too many issues, at least compared to what I was encountering with the Win 2000 Pro.

I do have some questions about the XP OS, however, so I will look for an XP forum.

    Thanks again, all.
