    Talking Re: Reinstalling all drivers - battery?

    Dan,
    HELP FILE FOR SONY DRIVERS. IT WILL NOT INSTAL---I TRIED THE C:dos on c drive and no luck. Really need this. (Sony CRX175A). Need your magic!

    =================================================
    Comments on "Device Driver & Utilities Ver. 2.1"
    =================================================

    1) Applicable models:

    * The utilities and device driver on this diskette are applicable
    to SONY ATAPI CD-ROM drives.

    Note:
    As for CD-R drives and DVD-ROM drives, these utilities and device
    driver can cover only CD-ROM function. The write function of CD-R
    drive and the playback function of DVD titles will require another
    utility or driver.

    2) Improvements:

    All SONY ATAPI CD-ROM Drives do not operate correctly with a
    CD-ROM Performance Test Program (CDT.EXE). SONY device driver
    2.26a returns the error against IOCTL input command (Audio Disc
    Info) which is issued at the start of this test program CDT.EXE.
    Device driver 2.27a is changed not to return the error against
    the first IOCTL input command (Audio Disc Info) after media
    is changed.

    It appears that the drivers you have are DOS level drivers. Old ones at that. (MSDOS 6.x)

    Quote from your post: As for CD-R drives and DVD-ROM drives, these utilities and device driver can cover only CD-ROM function. The write function of CD-R drive and the playback function of DVD titles will require another utility or driver.

    These DOS level drivers should not be required. Windows has drivers to support the CDROM functions. For burning, you'll need burning software. This unit apparently shipped from Sony with:
    .... an application software CD-ROM by Sony, which includes the "B's Recorder Gold" (company link) as a main writing software, the "B'sClip" software for packet writing, the "Retrospect Express" software for file backup. Also in the same CD-ROM you can find the "Photo Base" application by Arcsoft, a digital album photo software which includes Photo Studio for editing, the "ArcSoft's "Video Impression" as a video software and the "MusicMatch jukebox" for playing and creating music CDs. The software CD-ROM comes with a quick start guide for all the provided software. Lastly, the retail box also contains a useful cd marker pen.
    (Above Ref.: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Revi...ArticleId=6134 )

    In my search I've seen reports of NERO burning software being used successfully on this unit. ROXIO and Adaptec's Easy CD Creator would probably work as well. This is a guess, no guarantees. ;>) I've seen versions of (the same) burning software that only work with certain drives.

    "Everrest said no AGP. It is there but ..where or how to check?"
    Look under the PCI / AGP Video section. This should list the AGP type/chip.

    "How does one format on the C part of the drive?"
    The easiest way is to boot with a 98SE bootdisk choosing "Boot with CDROM support". Once you get the A:\> prompt, you'd type in format/c/autotest C:. This command will format the partition, recheck (the /c switch) any clusters which may have been marked as bad, and test the format without intervention. ie; Once you hit ENTER after the command, it's started. No looking back. Your D: partition will remain untouched as long as C: is specified in the format command. Ensure you have everything you want transferred to D: before you do this. ie;
    c:\MY DOCUMENTS
    C:\MYSTUF~1

    Does the c:\Sony directory contain your burning software?

    "When I read about partioning and having done it before I was told it did not matter where Windows was put. How would I know which is active."
    This is true. It ~can~ be loaded to any disk, partition, directory you choose. However, when this occurs, it generally puts everything on one partition. You appear to have two installs, the "operational" or "active" one being on D:. (As per your c:\msdos.sys file information.)

    If you go ahead and format C: and load a new install of 98SE, it will find the D:\Windows directory and ask if this is where you want it. No. At this point, redirect the install to C:\Windows. Once installed, any special hardware drivers (modem, NIC) etc can be loaded, and then any software applications you may have. MS Office, firewall, anti-virus, etc. Then and only then should the deletion process begin for the D:\Windows installation. As I stated, we'll walk you through step by step.

    "There are things not right on this computer. Files titled with gribbish that I do not know what they are."
    Would these be something like "file00xx.chk"? If so, they're remnants of a Scandisk lost cluster save or similar. These can be deleted if you aren't attempting some kind of recovery using the information in these files. They are however, fragments of information and using them is a long and tedious process, if you know where these information fragments belong. Otherwise, deletion is the common choice.

    "Dial up at 28,000 right now usually 48, 000."
    A clean install would probably help in this regard.

    Thank you for all the wonderful information!!

    Do I ned to install Dos6? (using w98SE)

    Moved all of C: folders to D except MY DOCUMENTS and other loose files. I did Cut and Paste. Special instructions for My Documents? What about the 50 or so loose files?
    You wrote C:\MYSTUFF~1, does that have anything to do with DOS descrption?

    MY Stuff is back on C with only a mail folder it it. And a profile folder???

    My Stuff is also on D: full of my data.

    However I have lost all 100+ emails from OE this am when I turned on the machine. Different profile without my mail and cutom folders. Where would I look? (I found a USER folder with a Batch users and Defaut user.)

    Found App. Data>MS>OE.>mail but very old stuff not what was there yesterday.

    Sony folder only has the base files for CD. Programs are installed in other folders.
    Tried to send bmp file.

    So Very appreciative I have you on board. I do have a mess here.

    PS Everret will not show mutiple pages only basic. Maybe I have to reinstall to view drivers, AGP,etc.

    No. Windows 98SE is DOS 7.10a. You'd be wasting space and going backwards with functionality.

    My Documents is a system protected file. Just COPY all contents of all directories over to D:.

    What about the 50 or so loose files?
    Same as above, COPY all over to D:.

    You wrote C:\MYSTUFF~1, does that have anything to do with DOS descrption?
    Yes. As I didn't know the complete name of that directory, I just used the listing description from your capture of the Dirs on that drive. I figured you'd want what was in it and didn't want it forgotton.

    MY Stuff is back on C with only a mail folder it it. And a profile folder???
    My Stuff is also on D: full of my data.

    This is OK. Once a new install is performed, anything you want can be moved back, or accessed on D:.

    However I have lost all 100+ emails from OE this am when I turned on the machine. Different profile without my mail and cutom folders. Where would I look? (I found a USER folder with a Batch users and Defaut user.)

    And;

    Found App. Data>MS>OE.>mail but very old stuff not what was there yesterday.
    Outlook Express usually saves it's data here: C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{EEAE16C0-DE40-11D9-9254-8E0C1DC59F37}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Copy this folder to D:. We'll send it back to the correct folder in the new install on C:. (It's the .dbx files that contain your Outlook Express settings, mail, etc.)

    In your case, the PATH is probably: D:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{EEAE16C0-DE40-11D9-9254-8E0C1DC59F37}\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Since there are two Windows directories on two different partitions, it could be either one in play, but I tend to think it's the one on D: that's active. As I stated, I've never seen a system "jumbled" in this manner. ;>{

    If you want, until you're ready to do the "switch", these can be set back up on the current C:, from where you cut them. (That's why I stated COPY for all these transfers in lieu of CUT & PASTE. This way nothing would be affected or disturbed before the format. That's partly my fault. I should have stressed the COPY action.)

    Sony folder only has the base files for CD. Programs are installed in other folders.
    Are these those old DOS level driver files etc?

    PS Everret will not show mutiple pages only basic. Maybe I have to reinstall to view drivers, AGP,etc.
    When you open EVEREST use the Report Wizard to save ALL PAGES in html format. With this format the report opens in Internet Explorer, and if you're online to the Internet, you just click on links in the report to find drivers etc.

    Not on your life.

    MY Stuff is back on C with only a mail folder in it. And a profile folder???

    However I have lost all 100+ emails from OE this am when I turned on the machine. Different profile without my mail and custom folders. Where would I look? (I found a USER folder with a Batch users and Default user.)

    Found two profiles of DBX. files. Have had prior problem and lost them How to keep all mail without over writing? IMPORTANT.

    D:. Can hardly wait. Machine is already running 60% better.

    I guess. B’s Clips and old Retroexpress.
