    However I saw something that may be the trouble I have with my new printer. I cannot use the Director for the 5510 HP all-in-one. Getting error in file//D:ProgamFiles\HP\ Digital Imaging\bbfe\director\director3.htm. (library dll error).

    The DOS screen I was reading for the attributes had the followig line: R HPQING~1.dll.
    I had a 4 hour sesion with HP and it was not fixed. Thre were over a thousand log file entries.
    I got rid of ervythig HP related from everywhere and stared over. The computer can move now. Hogs are HP, McAffee, AOL.

    "ABLE TO PASTE FROM WORD ONLY, NO NOTEPAD OR WORD."

    Use a text only editor (such as Notepad when altering) system files. Do NOT use Word or WordPad. These are enhanced editors which renders the file unreadable in DOS. If you just used Word to copy and paste the info here then disregard this warning as you already probably know this.

    From your MSDOS.SYS file,
    [Paths]
    HostWinBootDrv=C
    WinBootDir=D:\WINDOWS
    WinDir=D:\WINDOWS

    it tells me the system is booting off of the C: drive, but running the Windows installation which is on the D: drive.

    However, your directory listing from C: also shows me that there is a C:\WINDOWS directory. If this directory is full of files, it means you have two Windows installations, but it's only using one, on D:. I think this is the case as some of the associated directories created with a Windows installation are there as well. If this is indeed the case, some of these directories/files can be deleted freeing up a lot of space on C:.

    I also see a DOS directory on C:. (C:\DOS) Do you have some version of dos installed on this machine as well? If this contains any dos files earlier than 7.0, it's basically useless and just taking up hard disk space.

    It appears as though you have quite a jumbled system. First time I've seen something this scrambled. Because, you've got (along with a Windows directory) on C: -

    MYDOCU~1 <DIR> 09-05-03 1:40a <-- this is "My Documents"

    And on your D: drive you have
    PROGRA~1 <DIR> 03-11-03 3:59p <-- this is "Program Files"

    So the files needed for operation are spread across two drives.

    You also have a D:\WIN98 directory. Is this is a third windows install, or just a dumping ground you created?

    You have two out of three system_booting files on D:.
    IO SYS 222,390 04-23-99 10:22p
    MSDOS SYS 1,847 09-17-05 3:57a

    These two as well as the third system_booting file, Command.com, are on C:, and the system is booting from there ( C: ), so the two on D: can be deleted. (Use the deltree command outlined below.)

    There's also a 6 MB SYSTEM.1ST file on C: which is a copy of your first install registry. However, the date on the other WINDOWS directories, as well as other files in evidence show this is way out of date, so you could delete that as well. To delete this file, either boot to dos or open a dos window, and type in

    deltree/y c:\system.1st.

    For now, I would rename the msdos.sys files on D: to msdos.ysy and leave them until we're sure they are dormant/useless.

    Short of a backup of all data you want, and a fresh install, we'll have to limp along with this until we get it running smoothly.

    CAN IT BE POSSIBLE TO GOT DIRCETORIES - WINDOWS ON D AND ONLY DATA ON C?
    (c IS A SMALLER PARTITION).

    i WILL LIMP UNTIL I CAN GET THE CDRW DIRVEERS INSTALLEDTO USE MY BACK UP SOFTWARE AND THEN START FROM SCRATCH. ( DO HAVE ANOHTER HARD DRIVE TO USE AND CAN REBUILD WITH NEW AMD 64 CHIP, ETC). THIS MACHINE IS OVER 2 YEARS OLD.

    Took me a minute to realize you had embedded answers in the quote box. ;>) I usually just skip down below these for newly posted answers.

    "i WILL LIMP UNTIL I CAN GET THE CDRW DIRVEERS INSTALLEDTO USE MY BACK UP SOFTWARE AND THEN START FROM SCRATCH. ( DO HAVE ANOHTER HARD DRIVE TO USE AND CAN REBUILD WITH NEW AMD 64 CHIP, ETC)."

    and;

    "CAN IT BE POSSIBLE TO GOT DIRCETORIES - WINDOWS ON D AND ONLY DATA ON C?
    (c IS A SMALLER PARTITION)."

    OK, windows ~is~ running, correct?

    If so, you can start saving files to the chosen DATA drive ( C: ) without installing more software. (Backup software.) Once everything you want is copied over, the DATA drive (currently C: ) can be disconnected and a fresh install performed on the O/S drive (currently D: ). This (O/S) drive should be placed as the primary or Master drive on the primary IDE channel which will make it the NEW C: drive. Then this new C: drive can be formatted, and a fresh install performed on it. Once the "new" O/S is up and running, the old C: drive can be connected (now making it D: ).

    NOTE: Any programs which were installed will have to be reinstalled onto the "new" O/S. ie; Anti-Virus, firewall, malware/spyware tools, MS Updates, MS Office (Word, Excel, etc).

    Post back if you want to go this route. Any instructions you require to walk you through it will be posted.

    Dan,
    I am not ready yet to even backup. Sony CDRW driver will not install from Floppy or exe file i downloaded. Exe file wants to make floppy to work from. It that because my bios is going to CD rom First? . (Atapi).

    I could get driver to install on D: for installation. Device manager shows no drivers for cd rom.

    So far I have all data on C: My Documents with my mujsic, my picture, my downwloads and My 'STUFF. (holds all my data). Coud move all to D: except my data file. Every program is on D:

    NOTE: this is one hard drive partioned ie C, D.
    PS want to up grade my computer and useXP and new AMD 64 chipset. Have not found any prebuilt except compaq. Do not prefer that choice.

    I earllyl want to get rid of the seemingly muti systems. No very sucure here when all my login passwrds were changed and y email address was invaled last week.

    I did delete the first run suggested. Please advise next step.

    When I have tired other dos diagnostics from RUN ,the screen zips by so fast I cannot read it.

    Dan, on page#15 Msdossys shows C boot. Why not just edit to D boot.
    I under stand what you are trying to explain to me. That would work when I wipe the other hard dirve and put it in this CPU. Primary concern is getting my back up. AND erasing the junk. Looks as if I have 95 networiking, Nt other stuff and so on.

    My utmost appreciation.

    "NOTE: this is one hard drive partioned ie C, D."

    OK, that explains some things.

    You shouldn't try to edit the msdos.sys file to "D boot". Number one reason being, the system (hard disk) has only one ACTIVE partition, C:. Your D: partition is a LOGICAL drive, created within an EXTENDED partition. The machine can only boot from an ACTIVE partition, ie; C:, the Primary partition on the Primary hard disk.

    To preserve your data, and in this new light of things, do the opposite of what I stated in post #16, you can copy everything you want to save over to the D: partition. Then as stated above, you could format C: and reinstall Windows. Again: Any programs which were installed will have to be reinstalled onto the "new" O/S. ie; Anti-Virus, firewall, malware/spyware tools, MS Updates, MS Office (Word, Excel, etc).

    Edit:
    To reinstall Windows you will need a 98, 98SE, or XP CD, and the product key for that CD. Also you haven't mentioned if this is a proprietary type (Brand Name) system. ie; Compaq, Hewlett Packard, Gateway, IBM, Dell, etc. This will make a difference.

    So if the system is currently running, just copy things over to D:, there is no need (at this point) to install CDRW burning software. Once the "new" O/S resides on C:, clean up can be performed on D:, ie; deleting the old Windows directory etc. I can walk you through this if you require. Certain steps should be performed in a certain order. Don't just start deleting things. ;>)

    If you want to install XP on this machine, the same applies. Copy what you want preserved over to D:. XP can then be installed on the C: partition (based upon what you find in the links below).

    You should look here and here to see if this machine will support an XP install.

    XP Readiness Test

    Let us know your intentions/findings, and we can proceed from there.

    Oh Boy. One great mind is better than 1/2 of mine with yours!

    I have my W98SE disk full. This is a computer I built. Asus board and AMD XP 1500+.
    How does one format on the C part of the drive?

    Everrest said no AGP. It is there but ..where or how to check?

    When I read about partioning and having done it before I was told it did not matter where Windows was put. How would I know which is active. Maybe I swithced everything by mistake. Also, yesterday I took back the XP up update. This system is not enough. Right now is it worse than my old PII of 4 years ago.

    There are things not right on this computer. Files titled with gribbish that I do not know what they are.

    Dial up at 28,000 right now usually 48, 000.

    sign off, for now.
