Re: My pc keeps freezing for no reason, can anyone please help?

    *Bump*

I'm having this same problem. My system is ad/virus free, I'm behind a router, I don't do quesitionable activities, and I scan almost daily and check Task Manager > Processes hourly. However, my Win2k halts after only a few seconds whenever I begin a Torrent, IRC file transfer, or major game update such as Half Life 2 or Counter-Strike: Source. A friend told me it was an issue with Service Pack 4 and Wireless, and I am running wirelessly. Linksys gave me instructions, stating it was a problem with the router. I know this is not the case, because I have tried three separate routers at three different locations. It has something to do with my Windows, but what can I do to fix it without uninstalling SP4 etc?

    Any help is greatly appreciated

    Keyne,

With all of the detail that was discussed in that old thread that you posted on the end of, I doubt that it was exactly the same scenario, which is why the D-A-L Forum Rules request that members don't tag onto the end of old threads. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that a thread with lots of posts in it will get less attention as most of us will ignore it, assuming that it is complicated and someone else has already been dealing with it for a while! For that reason, I have split your post into a new thread for you

However, as you've said that it's the same problem, I do have to ask:

    a) Have you upgraded your PC from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 SP4 or has it always been on 2000?
    b) Have you upgraded the memory? If you have, please describe the configuration, e.g. 2 x 128Mb, and whether the problem has only occurred since the upgrade.

When you look in Task Manager, how much memory is it using and how much is available (RAM and pagefile / virtual memory)?

Could you try to replicate the problem with Task Manager running in the background and keep an eye on the CPU usage? Does it go up to 100% when you start an IRC transfer, for example, and stay at 100% when it locks up?

When the PC "freezes", can you still move the mouse and/or start other applications such as Windows Explorer or does it literally lock up everything?

Are there any error messages displayed on the screen? Any errors shown in Windows Event Viewer relating to the crash (you could check this after rebooting)?

    Ah sorry *Is Newbish* :P

    A) No, fresh install of 2k, legit copy.
    B) 1 GB Dual Channel Micron RAM, so it's a pair of 512's, been using the same RAM for months now.

Mem usage is at 178792k / 2521184k, this is after just turning turning it on and exploring to this point, opening Win Explorer, and a Notepad.

Total Kernel Mem is 46344, Paged is 35620, Nonpaged is 10724.

When the system freezes, it fully halts. Mouse locks, incapable of any activity, inability to start or close anything. It's like the system takes a photograph of whatever it was doing and sits there. There's never any error messages before or after, the system FSODs, I hit the reset button, and it goes back into Win2k like nothing ever happened.

I can easily replicate it, I'll post if it jumps on CPU usage, because I know it WILL halt when I start anything :P

k, took it half an hour that time, with three torrents running simultaneously.

CPU was at 0% when it FSODed, there were a few 2%s and 3%s behind it on the graph

So far I've switched routers, services, wireless adapters, and even ghosted to different hard drives. I'm fairly certain it has something to do with Windows. The only cure I could find was dragging the entire system to the router and directly connecting with basic Cat5/6 cable. I technically can't use wired because it means having the computer on the office floor, so I need to fix this wireless problem for certain

It's frowned upon but you can get away with it now and again if you think you've been forgotten

I'm a little puzzled to be honest. What makes you think it's a problem related to the fact that you've got a wireless LAN? It seems that you're only getting the problem when you're running "torrents" which, as far as I understand, means P2P transfers doesn't it? Or have I misunderstood?

Does it all work OK when you're not doing P2P transfers?

It's P2P, but also major updates, such as Half Life 2 (1 GB+ update initially). Mostly P2P though, like Kazaa and Torrents and IRC file transfers. If it was just the P2P it'd be easier to pinpoint, but the updates thing threw me off. Last night I went into my Network connections and killed everything except File Transfer, MS Client, and TCP/IP. I haven't tried using P2Ps yet to see if I get frozen again, but I plan to. Could running Netbios, NetBUEI AND TCP/IP be causing the problems? Could it be packetting incorrectly?
