    Colors stuck at 16

Had to reinstall win 98SE after adware attack. Since reinstallation I only get 2 choices for colors (2 and 16) and monitor is stuck at 640x480. This is an HP Pavilion 6330without a seperate video card. There was a thread in january with someone with a similar problem but he had a seperate vidio card. Have checked both the video and monitor drivers but windows says both are the proper ones and that they are installed properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

If you have an on the board driver you will need to reinstall the video driver from the motherboard CD. Or the drivers CD that came with your computer

Restoring software and drivers in Windows 98 and Me
Perform the following steps to restore a single program or device driver:

    1. Start Windows and place the last recovery disc into the top CD/DVD drive.

    2. A Driver and Application Recovery window appears.

    3. Click either the Applications or Device Drivers tab depending on what is to be recovered.

    4. Select a program or driver from the list.

    5. Click OK. The driver or program automatically restores to its original state.

    6. An Application Recovery screen appears after the software is fully recovered.

    7. Click Continue to recover another application, click Restart to restart the computer, or click Quit to end.

Have been able to get the proper driver from hp support after 3 tries. It has been down loaded to desktop. This is a used computer that I bought without the original recovery disks. Even though the proper driver is installed (I am able to set colors from the monitor tab in settings when I try to restart to apply the new settins I get a BLUE SCREEN of DEATH error message that says"s "fatal exception 0337:00005603. Display problem with display settings. adaptor type is incorrect or current settings do not work with hardware. Then need to restart and stuck in this loop.
The adaptor driver in the device manager is SIS 55597/5598. The devide on the moterboartd that I think is the adaptor says Sis5598. a
    Any Ideas?

Download, install, and run Everest Home Edition (Freeware).

This program will provide detailed system hardware information. Look for "Display" under the "Summary" section. This will tell you what you have. You can use the Report Wizard to save All Pages in HTML or text format. HTML will provide direct links to the various hardware manufacturers for your hardware, for things like drivers, etc.

    Post back your results.

Thank you. Tried it. It got me to the proper driver But when I try to change the settings and re start. i grt the BLUE Screen Of Death with"Fatal exceptin @0337:00005603 Display problemwith diplay settings adaptor type is incorrect or current settings do not work with hardware. Then when I restart as needed I'm right back where I started colors @16. The driver is SiS5597/5598. There is a device on my motherboard that say SiS5578 so I think this is correct and I am able to change setting on control panel prior to having to restart and being put back into the loop.

I've got a Windows 98 driver for the SiS5598 on-board graphics chip that has worked successfully for me before. I'm going to upload it to my web site for you and then give you a link to it. It will be a compressed ZIP file so you'll need a copy of Winzip to decompress it. Winzip is free for evaluation purposes from http://www.winzip.com.

Go to http://www.FutureSystems-Sussex.Co.UK and then click on the yellow 'Downloads' banner at the top to download the driver that I've posted up for you. Let us know if that helps
