    Windows 98 freezes

My computer freezex every time just after I enter the Windows 98, it even freezes in safe mode as long as I try to run some (not all) programes, I suspect this could be caused by that I deleted some windows files by accident or one of drives is damaged due to I formated it several times before this happen, how can I get my computer work again without losing any data? Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

We need to understand exactly what you've done Dan. You say that you deleted some Windows files. Do you know what files you deleted or what directory you deleted them from? This is very likely to have caused a problem. Are they still in your Recycle Bin and, if so, is the problem solved if you restore them from the Recycle Bin?

You also said that you have formatted one of your drives several times. Do you mean that you have one hard disk (e.g. drive C) which has Windows installed on it but you have another hard disk (e.g. drive D) that had other files stored on it and you have now wiped them off? If so, what files were on the hard disk that you formatted? If the drive that you have formatted was a floppy disk drive or CD drive, then this is not the cause of the problem.

You said that your computer freezes in normal mode and in safe mode but only after you try to run some programs. Does it load up without errors if you don't run any other programs? If certain programs cause problems, which programs are they?

Do you get any error messages when the computer stops responding?

If you've been deleting files / formatting drives, you might also have deleted your Windows swapfile (virtual memory).

Thank you DLnafey, I formated hard drive E: several times, but my windows is on drive C:, I did move some files- which I am not sure what to clean some rooms in C:. The computer most liikely to freeze whenever I try to do anything with hard drive E:.
There iis an error message, which is"A fatal exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C003360B in VXC VFAT(01)+00003036B."
By the way my hard drive E: is in FAT16 format, the others are FAT32. I cannot open any recycle bin, the copmuter freezes.

The error message was useful. Here is a Microsoft Support article that describes your problem and has a fix that you can download.

Now I found out that the computer still freezes with the first message " A fatal exception 0E has occured....", it seemed the program I downloaded did nothing about it.
