Help with slow system
Hi,
Last night we had a power surge/glitch. Computer running and went in re-boot. Nothing else in house affected. Now my system is running extremely slow. Will not boot into Windows, but can start in Safe Mode. It takes forever to boot and when in safe mode everything is sloooooooow. Can this be a memory failure from the power problem? What other hardware failure can cause this?
Thanks,
Carlc

It's possible the RAM took a surge hit, but unlikely. If any other hardware failed the system will let you know. If it was that much of a surge, the power supply would be damaged. This isn't ruled out yet however. It's possible it's not delivering the correct voltages/amps due to damage.
It's probably just that the system files have become "jumbled" somewhat.
"Will not boot into Windows, but can start in Safe Mode."
Do you get the MS Startup Menu, or does it boot directly into Safe Mode with no menu?
Run scandisk on your hard disk(s) from DOS. Easiest way is start with a EBD floppy (Emergency Boot Disk).
While in Safe Mode, open Device Manager and check the hardware listings. Post any yellow exclamation marks you find.

Well...looks like it is ok now. I have an ATX. I uplugged it for a while and am using a new power strip (surge) and all is back to normal. Maybe it was the surge protector?
Thanks
