error msg: cannot load remote access library
Hi, I just did a clean install of windows 98se and when trying to set up my internet connection I get the above error message. Can anyone help me? It says it can't find this file: rasapi32.dll. Thanks. - Shelly

Insert your Windows 98SE CD. Go to the Start Menu, then the Run option and type in sfc and click OK. When you get the option to scan for files or extract one specific file, extract the Rasapi32.dll file from the CD. Extract it into your C:\Windows\System directory, then reboot.
Let us know if that helps

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. I ended up going into setup for communications, uninstalling and reinstalling stuff. That enabled me to set up my internet connection. But now I have a new problem. My modem is not being detected. Any ideas?

If your modem is a seperate card in the system, pull it and post any info off of it, including the info on the largest chips on the circuit board. (Or, leave it in and do the following; )
If the modem is embedded on the motherboard, download, install and run Everest Home Edition (Freeware). Post the modem information that Everest finds.

Hi Dan, I like that program you pointed me to. Thank you. OK, it's a Harmonics (Conexant) softk56 winmodem, PCI bus, device ID 14f1-2013, subsys. ID 155d-6793... One thing that is happening is: my available com port is com1. Windows keeps wanting to install it on com5, which as far as I can tell doesn't exist. Windows tells me it's properly installed on com1, then when I boot up it tells me I have new hardware and tries to get me to install it on com5.

You can obtain the List Modem application (to fully ID your modem), and the appropriate drivers from here.
Post back if they work.

So... you are saying that the com port confusion is because it's the wrong driver? The driver I am using has the exact # that my modem has on it(mw560ci). Just wanted to ask before I go through more steps. The conexant website didn't make it sound too hopeful.

Having the model number makes things much easier. Although the modem ID application at the CONEXANT site should have provided you with the information to choose one of the drivers there.
I have also found;
If you have an Emachine; Drivers
If the modem has a Rockwell chip; Drivers
You can probably change the Comm port being called for in the .ini or .inf file for loading the drivers. I've never tried it, but it can't hurt. Just save the original file(s) to revert if needed.
