After I reinstalled Win 98 on a gateway pc the only color choices are 2 and 16. What's up with that? I need 256 to play certain games. I had it before reinstalling win 98. Any suggestions? I would appreciate any help with this problem. I hope to get the computer up and running for my 8 years old neice.
You need to download and reinstall the video drivers, then reboot and it should be right.
Thanks. I will try that and let you know.
Watching this one very carefully as I have the same prb...I've downloaded, re-installed, overwritten, replaced, renewed every damn thing I can think of, and it's still running only 16 colors and 640x480 resolution.
I even attached a different (brand new) screen - same prob....did the same erase/re-install saga with that one...no joy.
Last time I reinstalled Win98, I had the same prb and to pay a computer store to fix it for me, but didn't think to have them write it down !! How smart am I ?!!?
So - shortcajunlady....if you can crack it, pleeease reply to let me know how you did it !!
TassieDevil - when you say 'video drivers', can you say, in 2 year old language...EXACTLY what you mean ? Do you mean the monitor's driver ?, some PCI driver ? SVGA or XVGA rather than VGA ?...
Kellehs, Post the make/model of your PC and we will help you find the drivers. When Tassie says drivers she means for the video card, if you know what video card you have that would be even easier for us to help you find the drivers.
A driver is software used to control a hardware component or peripheral device of a computer, such as a modem, disk drive or printer. If you do not have the current device driver for a specific hardware item (i.e. modem) that device may not function properly
tassie, do I have to uninstall the video card before downloading the new drivers? I found the site for the drivers but have not tried installing them yet.
PC is Compaq Presario 5BW120 (5000 series)...no idea what kind of video card I have.
When I reinstalled Win98 it loaded a "Standard PCI Graphics adapter" VGA driver, in C:\Windows\system\vga.drv
Before I reformatted my C: drive, I saved everything that looked remotely useful, including anything that smacked of being any sort of driver file/library/folder, so if you have any suggestions for different drivers, I may have it already....just don't know what to look for or where to look !
Thanks for your help !
No shortcajunlady you don't need to uninstall the card. Just install the new driver, reboot and you should be able to adjust the colours then.
Kellehs, download aida32 here http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Reviews/r847.html run it and it will tell you what video card you have. Post back what it is here and we'll help you find the right driver for it.
No luck I'm afraid...I get a msg saying that 'aida32.hu, the home of Aida32 is closed' and it won't allow me to download anything.

Sorry, try this one, it should start downloading automatically.
