can not find device file

    can not find device file

    On start up I get a message
    Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T STATUS BAD, Back up Replace
    I have tried to reboot my pc using the start disk from the a promt i have tried the following
    scandisk/all/autofix/nosummary
    fdisk/mbr
    sys c:

    I now receive the following message
    can not find device file that may be needed to run windows.

    any suggestions?

    It sounds very much like your hard disk has some physical damage. The SMART system is the System Monitoring And Reporting Tool and it normally only reports the status as "bad" when there's something very wrong. Might be time for a new hard disk

    Can you try to boot the system from the Startup Disk and, when it gets to the A: prompt, type scandisk c: and see what it reports in the summary at the end. Let us know whether it reports any errors. If it reports that it found errors and fixed them all, run it again. Keep running it until it says 'No errors found'. If it still reports errors after being run 3 or 4 times, let us know what the errors are (if it tells you). If it reports 'bad sectors', that means physical damage that cannot be fixed.
