    Cannot boot win98 on newly built computer

    I recently rebuilt my computer that had windows XP installed on it by changing the motherboard and graphic card e.t.c. I changed most of the parts and just kept the HDD. I decided to format since I wanted to start from the begginning, so I formatted my HDD. I only have the upgrade version of windows XP so I installed windows 98 first. The installation went well for the first half but after the first restart required by the installation, the hardware detection the process stopped at 6%. I restarted by pressing the reset button and it boots to the windows 98 boot screen but fails to boot. the same happens for Windows ME installation however when using Windows ME the system powers off at the boot screen.

    These are the specifications for my computer:
    AMD Athlon 64 <---- not sure about this
    1GB of RAM
    Radeon X800 256MB VRAM Graphics card
    ASUS A8N-E motherboard

    it was upgraded from a computer with the following:
    P4 1.8Ghz
    512MB of RAM
    GeForce 4 MX 32MB VRAM graphics card
    ASUS P4B533 motherboard

    most of the components were changed however the power source / power adaptor, CD-ROM drives, HDD and case were reused. I'm sorry if this was a long post but im really desperate in getting my computer to work. Anyway, if anyone can help me I would be extremly grateful. Thanks in advance!

    It may seem like an odd thing to say but your system might be too GOOD to run Windows 98! My initial thoughts are:

    - run it with less memory (i.e. 256Mb or less if possible);
    - run it with a smaller graphics card;
    - does a 64-bit Athlon processor run on Windows 98? I don't know.

    and also (unrelated to the Windows version) ....

    - is the original power supply powerful enough to run the new hardware? The graphics card alone would be taking quite a bit out of it. What power rating is it?

    To add re; the O/S, Load XP directly. There is no need to load 98 first. The upgrade CD contains all you need. This is how my XP-Home is installed.

    Boot with the XP CD. Choose Install and follow the prompts. Choose the drive and format it NTFS. At one point you will be asked to insert the CD of a previous windows. Put the 98 cd in the drive to "validate", and the install will continue.
