Windows Media Player file playback

    Windows Media Player file playback

[Moderators Note: This thread has been split from another similar thread.]

I'm having somewhat the same problem, using Windows Media Player. I can play a CD no problem, but when I copy to C;\MyDocuments\My Music then attempt a playback from that file I get no audio. It appears to be playing all right, but no sound comes over my speakers. I've made the same adjustments from digital to analog, etc, and tried changing every other setting I could think of, but so far no success. Anyone have any suggestions as to where to go to find that elusive setting?

    brotherleelove,

Since this is very similar to Skylanders problem*, have you checked your mixer settings to ensure the channel being used is not muted, or the channel volume is all the way down? (I gather that all other media provides sound.)

*Jumping into someone elses thread with your own problem is considered hijacking of the thread. If the above doesn't work, post back and we'll see if a new thread should be started on this. Your return posting along with Skylanders will govern the decision.

Sorry for hijacking, I didn't realize I was doing something improper, I won't do it again. As for my reply, I've tried every suggestion I've gotten and still haven't made any headway to getting audio during playback. Is there a BIOS setting that could be made?

What is "channel volume?" I've tried adjusting every and any audio and volume controls I've been able to find so far.

Please tell me if I need to start my own thread and I'll do so.

I've split the original thread, so you now have your own topic. This simplifies keeping things on track with one poster.

You won't have any sound choices in the bios unless you have an on board sound device chip. (Embedded in the system motherboard.)

When I spoke of channel volume, I was referring to the channels found in the mixer utility which is pretty well stock with any sound drivers software package. If you're running stock MS drivers on your sound device, you'd get to the mixer by right clicking on the volume control in the system tray and choosing Open Volume Controls.

If you've loaded drivers/software for your sound device (ie; Creative Labs, etc) the mixer utility should be available under Start, Programs, Creative etc.

From my posting above; "(I gather that all other media provides sound.)"

Is this so? If it is, it demonstrates that your sound device is working. So the problem must be with either the channel for that element of the sound device, or, the program/application which is feeding information to that sound device.

Everything is working and I've checked the sound controls on the mixer utility and still no audio when I play back from 'My Music'. WMP9 works just fine when I'm just playing a CD, it's only when I try the playback. VERY frustrating!

have you always had this problem or is it a new one? Also when you said about copying to C;\MyDocuments\My Music are you just copying and pasting the .cda files or are you "ripping them" to "library"

or is it an mp3 cd you are talking abut?

I'm not sure which process is being used, but using WMP9 there's a command function on the left side of the screen that says "Copy from CD". I'm not changing from CD to mp3, at least not intentionally. I'm trying to copy music to My Music so I can then send it by email. The problem is not with my speaker or volume settings, it's with some deeper level of setting that isn't allowing all the information to be transferred. After the copy process is complete and I send the file to someone there is no audio on their end either.

    madmikejt12,
The program creates .wma (Windows Media Audio) files from the copy. WMP is very proprietary. Few other programs will convert/play .wma files. It dominates the system media and is a resource hog. I don't like it nor have used it in about six years. I stopped using it when it went to revision 7.1. There are many (free) programs on the net which will make mp3's for you, which is playable on most players.

    brotherleelove,
I have loaded the 9.x WMP and had no problems with copying/playing the files created.

With the information thusfar, I suggest uninstalling then reinstalling WMP.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled at least 3 times in an effort to correct the problem in case it was download-oriented, but STILL no success. I'm convinced there's an internal setting on my computer that is causing this problem. Why else would it play a CD but not copy and playback? I've tried adjusting the settings for my CD and my CD R/W players from Device Manager Properties and that didn't work either.
