If you have the software for the sound device (drivers and .INF files on floppy or CD, and any applicable updates since it's release tucked away), try removing the sound device in Device Manager and shutting down. Reboot and let the Hardware Wizard find the hardware and assign the files required. Watch for the "Have Disk" box and direct it to your software.
If you still have problems it may be hardware related.
Is this a new install of the sound device, or did it just start happening?
Have you installed any other new software coinciding with this problem?

the system was working correctly : i formatted hard drive and reloaded ..... i have tried to reformat c: drive and reload windows but when the device manager recognizes the driver the error message will display that "the audio hardware config needs to be reset in setup" i removed and reinstalled...i am going to format c: drive and load windows os without using gateway restoration cd... i believe the restoration cd is loading the wrong software for the sound card in which it is recognized wrong.... thats the only thing i can think..I even loaded correct software but will not run..maybe conflicting with settings on restore cd.... i am using a different restoration cd then the one that came with the computer.... I appreciate your reply....thanks wrench

This is most likely the cause of your problem. Restore CD's are unique to make and model number of OEM machines. You should visit the Gateway site and plug in the make/model information and you should find the correct drivers. (If it's still all original equipment loaded in the machine.)
