Laptop will not boot except Safe Mode

    Compaq Presario 1230 Win98se 128Mb upgrade
    Worked okay til yesterday pm
avg found trojan downloader small.41.d and vaulted it...
AVG and Spybot scans both run clear,
but on start up I am forced to Safe Mode.
And what I thought were my Emergy Disks, aren't...
so where do I go from here?

    Seems I have two issues:

First thing is to get up and running in Normal Mode (?)
Second thing is to find and deal with the source of the problem (?).

Might turn out to be the same thing only different...
BTW, I have a zipped version of HJT on the HD is required

*** If I am in the wrong forum, please advise and I will move. ***

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

OOPS, a folder for Hi Jack This is there, but no zip or exe, so I don't have any HJT program files.

Also, I did find an emergency startup disk, and it only gets me to Safe Mode. When I tried a Normal Restart a message reported that I am missing "vmm32" (? whatever that is), so I am no better off than before yet...

    Bear,

First of all, thanks for the posting above.
Much appreciate your time and effort.

The two links were about re-installing vvm32.

The first one was due to a scanner issue and I do not have a scanner.
The second was for Win 95. Will it work with my 98se?

The other thing is where do I find the files to re-install? Are they available on the web???

Would this be the same file? Just another newbie Q.

In case this helps, here is an update:

Have not yet re-installed vmm32---> see above questions

Seems that in order to get the computer up and running I have to do the following:
1: use a startup disk to get the sytem into ms-dos mode
    2: ctl-alt-del out of dos
3: start up again without the disk to get into safe mode
4: start up once more to get into normal mode and then everthing works okay, but it takes a long time for this last step. Didn't really time it, but waited for 10 minutes and went to the store, came back and it was up and running. To say the least, it took awhile, but it is up for the duration (maybe ?).

All this does not fix the problem. It is a pretty serious work around.

Is the vmm32 file I need located in the cab files? I'll wait for your answer to that Q before I continue.

    Thanks again.

First link at Microsoft Support leads to a bad link and there is no info for vvm32
Second link is for driver downloads for scanners and mouse drivers. I emailed their support, but it is the Weekend in Britain. No USA or Canada offices.

So, newest update: got it so the machine boots with a system disk created in safe mode, but that sucks... I guess I'll wait.

There are a few reasons why VMM32.VXD would appear to be missing. One of those is an issue with a couple of different types of scanners, as you've seen. Different problems may result in different error messages. Does the message on your PC say that VMM32.VXD is missing or corrupted or is it the following message?

"VMM32.VXD is required to run Windows. If this file is not in your PATH, you may need to reinstall Windows."

Let us know but, in any case, try this:

    1. Go to Start Menu > Find > Find Files Or Folders.
    2. Search for VMM32.* on your PC. Tell us what it finds and where.
    3. VMM32.VXD is supposed to be in C:\Windows\System. If it is, then:
    4. Go to Start Menu > Run. Type notepad C:\autoexec.bat
    5. Add the following line: path=c:\windows\system
    6. Reboot and let us know if it helps

okay. sorry about not getting back here sooner, but the machine took a holiday... know what I mean?

And, thanks for the advise about the path. I have already looked and the c:\windows\system is not there. I will take your advise and add it , and then post the contents of the autoexec file here along with (hopefully) positive results.

I've just now got the machine up and running again. I am hopeful it is as simple a task as adding a path.

How would it have changed???? Be right back...

Results are : the vmm32.vxd is in fact in c:\windows\system. That is good.

The bad news is the autoexec.bat file contents are as follows:

    c:\progra~1\grisoft\avgfre~1\bootup.exe
    set path=c:\windows\system\wbem;%path%

And I do not know whether to add the c:\windows\system before or after the second line???
