    Freezing - Memory?

    Hi
First Of All I'm not at all brainy when it comes to computers so sorry in advance.!
Basically i've had my pc for about 5 years now, but only just got broadband a couple of months ago.
Although downloads have been a lot quicker, it still pauses every few minutes and then carries on again. Also if i try doing a couple of things like listening to net radio while surfing it will freeze completely and need to be restarted.
I don't think i have any viruses as i am running McAfee Virusscan and firewall.

I don't paticularly want to get a whole new pc as this current one has a pentium 3 installed and i only use it for surfing.

The only thing i could think of was lack of memory,

Unfortunately i'm not sure what it has already but could this be causing the problems?

    look 4ward to your help!
    adam :-)

It's most likely memory or firewall/internet protection settings. The amount of programs you have running in the back ground also plays a factor in this.

Right click My Computer. Choose Properties. Your amount of RAM will be (usually) be the last line in the General window. What do you have?

What are you running on startup? (Start, Run, msconfig. Startup tab. What's listed?)

184 MB of RAM is enough for the machines intended purpose. ("i only use it for surfing")

Here's a listing of startup programs along with information on deciding if you want things to load. (To go directly to the listing, click on PROGRAMS just under the first paragraph.)

Basically you want your firewall, AV, video card elements, ScanRegistry, TaskMonitor, and SystemTray to run.

"....it still pauses every few minutes and then carries on again. Also if i try doing a couple of things like listening to net radio while surfing it will freeze completely and need to be restarted. I don't think i have any viruses as i am running McAfee Virusscan and firewall."

This behaviour can also be attributed to malware/spyware. While online, these type programs gather and send data back to the "host" site. This slows things down and detracts from the amount of traffic your internet settings are configured for. (Simultanious downloads/transfers, etc.)

I'd also suggest you hop over to the Spyware etc forum, start a new posting and post a Hijack this log so the knowledgable folks there can point out any potential problems. Make sure you're running the suggested revision of Hijack This.

    Hi Adam,
If you havn't already solved your resources problem by installing more memory AND/OR disabling Wun-necessary Windows OS programs (as recommended by Dan in previous post), you could free up some resources by disabling the following-(in your "MSCONFIG" file )
    >
    MCUpdateExe C:\PROGRA#1\MCAFEE.COM\AGENT\MCUPDATE.EXE
That's your McAfee autoupdate downloader program- (remember to check for updates manually)
    >
    QuickTime Task "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE"-atboottime
    Thats your Quicktime media player.
    >
    CAMEDIA Master C:\PROGRA~1\OLYMPUS\CAMEDI~1.1\CM_CAM~1.EXE
Thats your Camedia digital photo transfer (from camera to computer) program.
Be sure to disable these one at a time & re-start Windows after each deletion, just to check & make sure its not needed. Check your System Properties after each re-start & you should see an increase in the % of resources/memory.
These 3 programs are "memory hogs" & can generally be safely disabled.
If any of the programs won't "stay deleted" , then check each program itself for ways to disable them at startup from within the program itself.
    Hope this helps
