Icons are .ink files. Do you just not want to see the .INK at the end?

First off may I ask if the above was your full post?
I ask as we have seen quite a few posts being cut off in mid sentence.
Did you write more after "Have seen"
As to your problem I have seen this issue in XP & the awnser is a registry fix but I am unsure if that will work in 2K.
Do you get any error message when you click the icons?
Looks like the full message was truncated.
This is what it should have said:
Have seen other postings like my in other tech help forums. But they all address WinXP whereas I'm operating Win2000. I don't think XP apps would help/work in 2000.
To answer the last posts:
It's not that I don't want to see the .lnk extension on the icons. It's that when I click on them, all I get is the "open with" window. I have no idea as to what I can refer the open with.
Additonally, I cannot execute ANY .exe files, so I cannot use regedit, nor install any program , nor run Norton WinDoctor etc.
The only icons that work are MyDocuments,My NetworkPlaces, My Computer, IE6.0, RecycleBin, an mpeg file icon and Palm QuickInstall.
Hope this helps a little.![]()

Went to www.dougknox.com to download two files:
xp_exe_fix.reg and
linkfile_fix.reg
both theoretically clean up my type of problem on WinXP.
I used them anyway on my Win2000. The .exe execute problem went away but the lnk problem is not yet clear.
Fortunately I can launch some programs from their MyComputer folders.
I still cannot create new icons without getting the lnk extension.
Will connect to suggested sites and let you know of any progress.

Good news all!
Even with Win2000, running the xp_exe_fix.reg prog resolved the .exe problem.
In a Window 2000 tech help site, a posting talked about researching the Registry file for the LNK folder under the users/software branch. The posting said that only the (default) value should be in the key.
I had a ton of other values (didn't verify, but probably one for every icon on my desktop).
I deleted those values and left the (default) only. Rebooted and voila! One week's of frustration went away.
Thanks for all your help.![]()
Thanks for sharing your fix!
