    cant recover system/video

I have an hp xl848 p3 256 megs of ram. I recently had someone look at it and found little wrong with after it was hit by lightning. He recommended using system recovery to repair hard disks. everything was fine until i did this.i used sys.rec disk but a few years ago i replaced video card. now when it reboots it goes to the liscense agreement and a big blue blob is on the screen and i cant agree all i want to do is back out but it wont do that either even on restart(unplug) or anything i try. it will go on in safemode with all programs running.I have anew pc with XP pro much much better. is there any way to copy my version to old pc (no disk).if I can ever get to come back on right? thx for any help...Danny

    Welcome to D-A-L

It appears that your post was cut off. Can you confirm this for us?

Or did it post the way you wrote it?

    As to the issue:

Are you having problems with ME?

What sort of Recovery are you considering? Do you have a ME disk or an OEM disk?

Also what is the question re: video?

    Sorry for the confusion

I guess my post got cut off as i was registering on your site at the same time.so i'll give it another shot, I'm using ME on a hp xl848 with 256 megs of ram. it got hit by lightning about a year ago, just went and bought a new computer then and let it set after owning an hp wasnt a real big fan anymore ..lol.so a few weeks ago my son decided he wanted us to try and fix it.I took it to a friend and he found out that 1 slot in mobo was bad thats all everything else was fine. but he recomended rebooting with ME disk to remove errors on hard disks, heres where things went wrong....i had replaced my video card a few years ago. Now reboot with system recovery disk i'm guessing it wont recognize video card because it goes thru everything til it gets to the liscense agreement and thers a big blue blob onthe screen and it wont let me select anything and it wont let me back out even when restarting. even tried taking the battery out of mobo.I would just like to get out of the reboot and run registry first aid or something because it had the programs up and running fine until this. I would like to make a copy of my XPpro off my new pc (dont have disk) but dont know how. it is alot better than ME. I will probably network once I get the bugs out. please help...thanks for listening to my rambling...lol Danny

First off the XP question/awnser is no.
One version of XP will only work on one computer.
It cannot be copied with the exception of upgrading the computer or hard drive on which it was installed.
The product key is tied to the computer.

As to Repairing ME: is this system recovery disk an HP OEM disk?

Does the computer have an on-board VGA connection?

If so try plugging the monitor into the board rather than the video card.

    Perhaps something here will help:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bph07140

The recovery process starts, then gives an error or locks up
If the recovery process starts, then fails while recovering, use the following steps:

Remove any floppy disks and disconnect all printers, scanners, and cameras.

Place the first recovery disc into the top CD/DVD drive.

    Turn on the computer.

When the blue HP screen appears, press the F8 key repeatedly until a numbered list appears.

Type the number for Step-by-Step Confirmation and press the Enter key.

During the startup process, Windows will ask if it can start different items. Answer No to any lines containing DRVSPACE, DBLSPACE, or DWCFGMG. Answer Yes to other items.

Advance through the initial Recovery screens until Advanced Options appears at the top of the screen.

Select Exit to DOS from the Advanced Options menu.

The screen changes to black and a prompt appears.

    Type C: at the prompt.

At the new C:\ prompt, type smartdrv c+. This enables the hard drive to cache information before it writes.

Type in the optical drive letter followed by a colon (probably D: ).

Type recovery at the new prompt appears.

Continue the recovery process as normal. Use the HP Support document Running a System Recovery in Windows 98 and Me for detailed instructions on how to complete the recovery process.
