From the information that your BIOS has reported, it sounds like this is an old Intel486 laptop (e.g. about 10 years old or more). If it is that old, you might find that the problem is because the motherboard / BIOS battery has died. The BIOS needs a good battery to remember critical hardware information such as the configuration of the hard disk that is installed.

Try this as a test: Start the system, enter the BIOS and set the time to be as accurate as possible.

Switch off the system and unplug it from the mains electricity supply.

Leave the laptop overnight. Switch it on, go into the BIOS and check that the time is still accurate. If it is not, then you need to get a new BIOS / motherboard battery. This might be very difficult / expensive on an old system. If the time is still accurate, then the battery is working. In this case, you should click the links in my signature about how to auto-detect the hard disk and manually configure the settings if that does not work.

    I hope that helps

Yes you can format it if the PC can see the hard disk - if you do have a hard disk to format! And as long as you understand that formatting it wipes off EVERYTHING from the hard disk, including Windows and any programs that were previously installed.
