    Network Printer trouble

    Hello.

I run a small network based around Windows 2000 server and clients running XP and 98SE.

Previously the Windows 98SE computers were part of a WORKGROUP and could access a printer connected to one of the XP computers.

However, I changed the 98SEs to now log directly into the server and now I cannot establish a connect to the printer.

In Network Neighbourhood I can see the other computers.
When I try to Add Printer I can see Entire Network and other computers but when I click on the + next to the icon for the computer with the printer I get the following message: "The Log On Server could not be found".

    And thats where I'm stuck.
I created the 98SE computers as users on the XP computer using the same log in name and password but it hasnt helped.

Any help is very welcome since i cant find an answer on google

    thanks in advance

So you've taken the 98SE computers out of the workgroup and got them to log on to the domain? Have you done this by going into the Properties of Network Neighborhood, removing the workgroup name and ticking the box to get them to log onto a domain, specifying the domain name to log on to?

Are they running TCP/IP and/or Netbeui?

Have you got Server Manager in Administrative Tools on Windows 2000 Server? Do the 98 clients appear in there?

I'm not very familiar with XP but is there a File/Print Sharing option where you have to assign permissions to different users? Have you assigned permissions to domain user accounts?

Are you logging on to the 98 clients as the domain administrator when you're trying to establish the network printer connection? Incidentally, have you tried adding the printer to the 98 clients by going through Network Neighborhood? That's my preferred method - browse through the network, double-click the PC that's hosting the printer and it should show it as one of the shares - you can then right-click it to connect it.

Does the XP computer have a Windows 98 driver installed on it for the printer or are you having to "install" it locally on the Windows 98 PCs and then re-direct the port to the computer on the network?

Sorry, I know that's a load of questions but hopefully one of them will point to the answer!

Yes thats pretty much how I did it. I also entered the computer names and user names in Active Directorty on the Server

Are they running TCP/IP and/or Netbeui?
I believe so - One definitely is as well as other protocls - the other I will need to check

Have you got Server Manager in Administrative Tools on Windows 2000 Server? Do the 98 clients appear in there?
Theres nothing called Server Manager in Adminisitrative tools. But the computers are names in "Active Directory users and computers" and when they log on they are visible on the network

I'm not very familiar with XP but is there a File/Print Sharing option where you have to assign permissions to different users? Have you assigned permissions to domain user accounts?
I'll have to check this but I dont recall a place where that can be specified. Other computers running XP are able to acces the printer so something is working ok there

Are you logging on to the 98 clients as the domain administrator when you're trying to establish the network printer connection?
I must say I havent tried doing it that way. I will give that a go

Incidentally, have you tried adding the printer to the 98 clients by going through Network Neighborhood?
Yes, Ive tried it that way also and it gives me the very same message "the logon server could not be found"

Does the XP computer have a Windows 98 driver installed on it for the printer or are you having to "install" it locally on the Windows 98 PCs and then re-direct the port to the computer on the network?
When using the workgroup approach I did install Windows 98 drivers on those machines from the cd-rom. And they were quite happy...

Sorry, I know that's a load of questions but hopefully one of them will point to the answer!
Thanks very much for your questions - youve given me a few things to check and try out. I'll report back my findings

    cheers

Here's something else for you based on some of those answers:

    1. Can you ping the computer name of the XP client running the printer? It should return the IP address as a response.

    2. Can you ping the IP address of the same machine? It should return the computer name as a response (I think).

    3. Can you go to Start Menu > Run and type a couple of back-slashes and then the IP address? It might just open up a My Computer window listing the shares on the WinXP machine so that you can right-click the printer and choose the Install option. Well, you never know.

Ok so I logged into the Windows 98 machine as network Administrator and things seemed to go ok....I could see the other computer in Network Neighbourhood and when I double clicked it it thought for a while and then gave me a password box for client IPC$

This I thought was the last hurdle

So I typed in the passowrd for administrator and that came up as Invalid.
I tried numerous other passwords and they all came up as invalid.
I made new user accounts on the XP machine and entered those passwords but they all came up invalid.

So near but yet so far.....

    Any tips???

    Many thanks
    Volty

PS I could ping quite happily in most directions

Have you tried a blank password?

IPC$Temporary connections between servers using named pipes essential for communication between programs. It is used during remote administration of a computer and when viewing a computer's shared resources

Try removing NETBEUI from the XP system running the printer (if it has NETBEUI) and the Windows 98 PC.

Failing that, the only other idea that I've found after a little Internet research is that the password may sometimes be stored in the wrong case so try switching Caps Lock on/off.

Let us know if that helps

    hmmm....
There was no netbeui protocol installed on the xp machine
and I removed it from the win 98 machine
(in network connections I found it on the list of protocols and clicked remove)

when I restarted I logged back in as the administrator and in network places couldnt see any of the other computers listed (which has all been there before). I double clicked the Entire Network icon and got an error message saying "Unable to browse network".

I had no choice but to reinstall netbeui.

stumped now....especially cos it used to work OK under workgroup!

    thanks for your suggestions though
