System Restore

System Restore
I want to Restore my system back a couple of days but I cannot find that feature anywhere. My issues are with my Toshiba Satellite Laptop. It runs on Windows 98SE. I was trying to install a Neutopia Wireless 3D REACH LAN Card and all of the sudden my desktop became smaller, the entire screen did. I have updated all of my drivers and now I just don't know what to do.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thank you.

If you have created a Restore then run:
scanreg /restore
Must be ran from a MS-DOS prompt and not a shell will allow you to restore an earlier backup of your system registry. Information on how to get to a MS-DOS prompt can be found on document: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chdos.htm
If not then our 98 guru Dan Penny should be around shortly with more ideas.

As jephree stated, this action is performed in raw dos. (Windows cannot be running as you're going to replace files which make it run, and are thereby in use when running.)
Along with jephree's link, another way to start in raw dos is Start, Run, type in msconfig. Click on Advanced. (Near the bottom right.) Place a checkmark in the box for;
Enable Startup Menu
and the next time you boot the MS Startup Menu will come up. To remove it, just reverse these steps.
On the boot, choose Command prompt only. When you get to the C:\> prompt, type in;
scanreg/restore
You should be provided with up to five (boot) dates. Pick a date just prior to the problem occurance. This will restore your registry (system.dat, user.dat) along with the valid copies of system.ini and win.ini from that date. As long as no critical system files have been altered or removed, your machine should boot as it did on that date. Any software installs after that date will have to be reinstalled. As well, some MS (Security) updates may have to be reinitialized.

Regestry restore problem. I tried to reg restor and found my baks were dated last April. Why and how to fix so I am able to have daily registery backups? I had even increased the number to 15 prior dates. Any help is greatly appreciated. W98SE. Did I get hit by Win32.beagle net4? Thank you. Avie

Start, Run, msconfig. Click on the Startup tab. Place a check mark in the box for "ScanRegistry". If this entry is not there post back.
Also, while we're on the topic, it's a good idea to add the following lines to the end of the c:\windows\scanreg.ini file;
Files=30,config.sys,autoexec.bat,io.sys,msdos.sys
Files=11,vmm32.vxd
This will add additional starup files to the backup cab file, plus add the VMM32.VXD file as a backup. If this file gets "lost" (it happens more than you'd want) a windows reinstall is usually recommended. This is a dynamic file, and is continuously built upon as you add software/hardware to your system.

Open Notepad and;
copy everything below this double line
================================================== ==============
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run]
"ScanRegistry"="C:\\WINDOWS\\scanregw.exe /autorun"
================================================== ==============
Copy down to this double line, but don't include it. Save it as scanreg_add.reg and double click on it to merge it into the registry. Then see if the entry is in MSCONFIG, Startup Tab. You may have to reboot. Post back with your results.
I've just noticed there is a space being inserted into the replies in certain areas. Namely in the word "Current" above. Watch for this when you create the file in Notepad. It should all be one continuous line with NO spaces up to the last square bracket. ( ] )

You fixed it!! I just changed to my D:\ where I have my Windows file. I had found a line in MSDOS.SYS file whiche referred to scan reg. I also had added that. Woud I put my msdos.sys file in the root C: (my persoanl data) or D: where I have programs and Windows files?
Many thanks A

Msdos.sys is a system boot file and should be in the root directory of your boot drive. ( C: ) This is a protected file so if you want to change it or overwrite it with another, you'll have to set the attributes of the file to allow this. Before I tell you how to do this, please answer the following;
Am I understanding you correctly in that you have TWO versions of msdos.sys?
"I had found a line in MSDOS.SYS file whiche referred to scan reg. I also had added that."
What is this line?
AND, your win98 O/S is on D:?
If the reg entry: "ScanRegistry"="C:\\WINDOWS\\scanregw.exe /autorun" was accepted and it's working, then your O/S is on C:.
You have to be careful, if you put a (msdos.sys) file in place which has "bad" information, your system probably won't start. So.....
Please post the contents of the msdos.sys file you plan to use.

I have C and D partitions. DATA on C and D is windows and programs, etc. I have 2 identical msdos.sys files. One in C:root and other in D\Windows. I had edited them to add the reference I had found before your answer came along. The 2 msdos.sys files are from me moving files from C to D partitions at one point and forgot where it came from. HEHE
All seems to work well and the registry addition is there.
I corrected your registry line from C to D. See MSDOS.sys file below:
