There has never been a beep when starting.
Have started\stopped to many times for a good reg/restore. I now know to bckup.
Never been connected to Internet-
No ME CD to reinstall
No CD/floppy's of any drivers,etc.Just the computer.
History: bought/used in 2003.
The guy that built the putter, did his thing to remove previous data/ and sold it.
Bought HD printer, had problems trying to print-error msgs-called the guy, he came out and tweak it. Ran okay for about 2 months. then had power outtage-not connected to surge protector.My friend didn't know what that was.
Hit the start/stop for the next few months, then called me, his friend

Replaced battery -current time was wrong/figured it died
set the clock,
error about the printer. didn't stay on screen to read
I, being dumb, went in bios, clicked defalt settings.
re-started
it came up just great-everything working.
connected the printer. , opened a file, hit print-"not finding printer.
Just to say, I followed printer mfg instructions-start/program/hp/un-install. the re-installed w/disk. Won't do that again-Always should use install/uninstall in Control panel

Printer still didn't work. shut down computer.
Went back later and only blue screen w/blip of taskbar.
Tried to tweak the BIOS again-
No change.
This is what I have done so far-good/bad/dumb

Had to Change BIOS to read from floppy to start up disk
Edit c:\windows\system.ini
Shell=Progman / Shell=Explorer /Shell=Progman again and again.
At restart-:

Okay, that is for Internet, don't need that, right?
Went into edit system again-changed to Progman
re-start-got into Program Manager- Run control appwiz.cpl and uninstalled Ie 6
figured not needed anyway. Went back to Repair option. clicked it, nothing came up.
While I was there uninstalled the HP printer.that was listed in list.
Changed back to Shell=Explorer still the same blue screen

Then I checked out forums, delved back into DOS,it's been awhile, looked at files, to see what is there, ya know!
QUESTIONS: what to do? Not necessarily in this order
How to get putter up and running?

1. I have tried to go to SAFE MODE- all I get is grey screen, taskbar blip. "Safe Mode"
appears in the top corners/bottom blank and everything else.
Is there a way to change something to make it work?

2. In the BOIS "Trend Chip Away Virus - Enabled- Should this be Disabled till the putter is up and running? I read that virus prog should not be running while diagnostics
Also SMART is disabled- ?

3. C:>DIR C:\*.*/s/ah/p gave me the list of hidden files.
How can I change all of the files at once or is it just one at a time.
error :not changing system file" when I tried to change one.
Is there a way to access folder options thru DOS and change? I've just started reading about Registry/Regedit, am will to try anything-it's a dead putter anyway.
I want to look at the bootlog, DIR:SYSTEM BCKUP and there is a SYSTEM.1ST with a date of when the putter was sold. They are hidden and can't access.
Perhaps changing Attrib of System bckup directory and it has a good Registry.

4. Have read that you can copy a SYSTEM.1st and get the whole system going again.
Is that correct? If so, can ya tell me how? That is if I can get it to quit hidding.

5. In a forum, was suggested to copy EXPLORE.EXE and replace existing one? Could I get it from another directory on this putter? Only have access to an Old version Window98 computer(that I am using now).

Hope this made sense and you can help me, help my friend.
This has been actually been fun, learning. Backup is my first thought now, before doing anything, installing, etc. Why don't they tell people these things when they purchase a putter?

I waited and waited for a reply, then figured I didnt' explain properly so I just kept digging and this morning I did it.
I fixed most of the problems. Finally found something from Windows Web that if I followed Exactly the directions, the putter came all the way back to normal.
Now I just have problem with re-installing the printer, am working on that.

Glad you got your problem partially sorted out.
If you've got everything truely sorted out.. then..
all you should have left to do is re-install the printer drivers & have Windows "find" your "new" hardware.
