Windows boots and runs but when I run a DOS based program the PC locks up. It will not respond to the keyboard and PC has to be turned off to boot. Went to the DOS prompt from the program files and can not type commands. When in a DOS program the 'alt-tab' and 'alt-ctrl-del' have no effect.

First verify the basic command line works under your current configuration. Click on Start, Run, type in;

command

and hit Enter. Then type in a command such as; dir and see if it responds. When finished, type; exit and it should return you to windows and close the dos window.

Is your keyboard a standard AT or PS2?

I hate to admit what was wrong. The connection for the Keyboard had worked loose and I did not realize it because when testing I was not using anything but the mouse wen in Windows. Sure acted like it was locked up.

What counts is; the problem is gone.
