Re: error 1406 and installing problems

Installer issues except #5 is your nvidea graphics.

This is the only link I find from those events:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q266416

I need to take a step back here & see if I can find something fresh.
Will keep searching. Just btw: what is the make & model of computer?
Do you have a 2000 CD or an OEM recovery of some kind?

Do you see any events around the time this problem started? The hard drive install?

These were the first errors i got after installing hard drive, around this time, i was backing up cd to my hard drive, and burning it. i didnt notice anything wrong at the time. I dont know if these will help, but i've pasted all five that i got one after the other.

computer is a VIA P4M266-8235 motherboard with celeron processor if that helps. and yes i do have 2000 cd, but its very temperamental.....

sorry, misread your last msg, so those logs i sent you are totally irrelevant.... i'm thinking of just reformatting my hard drive now and starting from scratch with new larger hard drive that i've just removed....?

    Sounds like a plan.

Or you can try a Repair Install on the existing drive.

Here is a guide either way:

    http://www.windows2000.windowsreinstall.com/

Good luck & let us know if we can help further.

thanks for that.. but still no help tried the repair, and made it worse, i couldn't open a thing at all on my pc.... i got installshield error 1608: unable to create install driver instance. return code: -214722164

i then started from scratch with new hard drive, fresh installation of win 2000 pro, and i've still got all the same errors, and still cannot install bluetooth device, as cannot write value to key etc.... same message. Now i'm completely stumped as to what to try next!!

Just a thought: After a clean install the first thing to try is Windows Update

    & or have SP4 on a disk:

    Windows 2000 Service Pack 4

Already tried that.... as soon as its downloaded, i then get error saying extraction failed....

think i have virus.... got wextract_cleanup0 running in my start up list... but dont know how its still there when its fresh installation?????

wextract_cleanup0 is a common RunOnce after an installation.

It is what it says--a clean up routine. Programs that require reboots often
need access to files extracted from archives before windows loads...that
command loads the routine to clean up what is left.

The rest remains strange. Just to clarify: you did a Clean Install on a Formated Drive or partition.
There was nothing else on this drive?
This is the only drive on the computer?

My other suggestion would be to either have SP4 on a disk or preferably make a Slipstreamed 2000 SP4 disk.

Point being do not go online nor attempt a download untill SP4 is applied.

    Slipstream Info here:

    Hope this helps.
