    STOP: 0x1E Error

I have a Dell Dimension 4100 running Win2k Pro. Just installed HP's Photosmart 7260 printer software, rebooted the machine and - voila! a blue screen. I cannot boot in safe mode, debugging mode hangs, boot logging hangs... I'd like to avoid reinstalling the OS if at all possible.

    STOP: 0X0000001E (0XC0000005,0X80435B6B,0X3B81ED8C,0X00000004) KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

    *** Address 80435b6b base at 80400000, DateStamp 40d1d183 - ntoskrnl.exe

    etc, etc....

I have been through nearly EVERY MS KB article online. None seem to address this particular exception. If I can't find a cure, I'd at least like to find a way to boot in safe mode so I can manually remove the offending driver. Suggestions?

    Would appreciate assistance.

    TIA,

    LHB

If you cannot get in via safe mode, then your options are a) in place upgrade or b) parellel install with a BigCopy.

Its very difficult to try to identify whats wrong without spending some time interrogating the machine.

This would be a good canidate for calling Microsoft for assistance in getting out of it.

By "in place upgrade", can I take you to mean install XP over 2000?

Yes... trying to search through the umpteen bazillion WINNT subdirectories is a royal pain in the patootie. I've been tempted to just re-install Win2k but I have too much info on the HD to risk it and not enough $$ to call Microsoft since the OS is out of warranty.

As to "BigCopy" - I'm clueless... define/explain/elucidate? Please?

When you boot into safe mode, where does it stop or crash ?

Sorry, BK. No go to safe mode. Only BSoD or Recovery Console.

    LOL! Love your tag.

by in place upgrade, i mean an 'upgrade' install, where you reinstall the OS to the same location. you could also bump it to xp as an upgrade, either way.

a bigcopy is a scary way to restore a machine by copying selected files from a parrellel install to the broken OS directory.

With MS support, you get 2 free calls for w2k pro. Its 99$ on your third call. Since XP upgrade is only 80$, it might be cheaper to just get current on your OS if you cant get the inplace to w2k to work.
