    MSGSVR32.EXE conflicts

I've used Ulead PhotoImpact 6 very successfully since it became available. I've tried versions 7 & 8, but could never get them to work now matter how many times I tried using their tech support. Those 2 versions seemed to share the same problem I'm now experiencing with PI 10, which works beautifully SOME OF THE TIME. Here's the problem: it sometimes never completes the "opening" process. I use CPUIDLE which runs in the tray and shows (by my choice) the amount of CPU availability. When PI 10 starts to open the CPU useage, of course, is almost 100%, rising slowly to 85% availability once PI 10 (or any other program is fully opened). Often, there seems to be a conflict where PI 10 never completes the opening and the CPU useage remains at nearly 100%. PI 10 will work, but very sluggishly.

Using WinPatrol, I can check to see what tasks are active in the background. By systematically "killing" active tasks I could see what, if anything, was conflicting with PI 10. It turns out to be, consistantly, MSGSVR32.EXE By "killing" this active task, PI 10 returns to "life" and works fine. CPU availability returns to about 86% and all is well.

I've contacted Ulead Support and described this problem to them and am awaiting an answer. Thought I'd try here as well. What is MSGSVR32.EXE and why am I experiencing this problem ONLY WITH PHOTOIMPACT 10? No other installed software seems to have this conflict problem.

FYI: the system is clean--no spyware or malware as verified with my own AVG check and TrendMicro's "housecall" check. I've read where MSGSVR32.EXE can sometimes be taken over by malware and renamed. I've checked. This is not the case. I'm running W-98se on a Dell XPST 600r with 40 gig hd drv and 768 megs RAM. The graphics card is ATI Radeon 7500. All other graphics software: Adobe Elements, Adobe Illustrator 10, VuePro 32, work just fine with no conflicts. I've tried using the "Close Program" window and closing all background tasks except Explorer and SysTray. Doing all that does not help the MSGSVR32.EXE conflict with PI 10.????

    Thanks.

Are you sure you have the name correct? There is a valid c:\windows\system\msgsrv32.exe, however the msgsvr32.exe file is a trojan/worm added by the deadhat.b worm.

Dan: Yes, I have it correctly identified as: MSGSRV32.EXE. It is identified by WinPatrol as running now and it is called: Windows 32-bit VxD Message Server v.4.10.2222. In my research, I, too, read where that file could be highjacked by a worm, but exhaustive scans of this computer by SpyBot, Spyware Blaster, AVG 7 anti virus and Trend Micro's House Call have shown no evidence of "bugs".

Recently, the conflict with this file and Ulead's PhotoImpact 10 seems to have been resolved. There have been no more slowdowns. ???? I had similar problems with PhotoImpact 7 & 8, but that was before I had installed WinPatrol and was able to selectively "kill" background tasks that lead to the discovery of the "culprit"--the file named above.???

Dan: I stand corrected: The correct spelling is MSGSRV32.EXE I'm typing way too fast this morning. Sorry...

OK, msgsRV32.exe is good, as opposed to msgsVR32.exe, the worm version.

If I'm reading your latest correctly, the original problem has gone away, and you no longer have to kill the msgsrv32.exe process? If so, strange, but good.
