Question Minor problem after reformat/reload W98se

Can anyone tell me why I now get a small screen titled "Windows 98 Safe Removal Utility" that has no data in its windows? It momentarily appears during bootup after the desktop sets up but disappears before the wallpaper appears. It apparently does nothing other than annoy me. I have done file searches of the drive and the registry but I have not found it anywhere. If anyone can tell me where it is called from or how to get rid of it I would be very happy. Thanks.

You've installed the Windows 98 Second Edition update for USB devices. This includes a "Safe Removal Utility" to allow you to stop a running USB device before you connect it (although I can't recall ever seeing that option anywhere - maybe it's a silent tool that does its thing in the background).

The USB update is handy to have on the PC as it has compatibility improvements and, apparently, also offers around 300% performance improvement. I'd recommend leaving it on there but, if it is bugging you or if you're just curious to know a little more about it, have a look at this Microsoft support article that describes it:

    Hope that helps

Thanks, DJ. With your explanation and the Microsoft read I think I will leave it alone. I believe it must have been introduced with a new WD 160GB external USB hard drive that I recently installed and I didn't put the two occurances together. Thanks again.
