This year has seen an amazing number of times I have had to reload drivers of various sorts. Graphics cards, sound card, modems, you name it. And not just once, but numerous times. What is this a symptom of? motherboard problems

Possibly. It might just point to a Windows installation that's no longer stable due to various updates and applications that have been installed. It might be time to wipe it all off and start again.
