.dat files have wrong icons???
After 'saving' my computer by installing a backup of windows, I've noticed that all .dat (files of type) show an icon from Ulead PhotoImpact 6 rather than the usual Windows system file icon (small white page with Win flag and upper right corner turned down???? These files are then directed to "open" using the Ulead PhotoImpact 6 "Iedit" program. None of these .dat files have anything to do with Ulead PhotoImpact. These are the .dat files which appear randomly done the list of all files within the Windows folder on C:\, I can't seem to find the correct icon and I don't know what program opens these files. Any help out there?
Computer works fine otherwise.

Go into Explorer. Click on TOols and FOlder options. You will get a window wiht 3 or 4 tabs. Click on the tab with File Types. Go to the .dat extention and remove Ulead as the program to open with.

Thanks for the info. After deleting the "open" command and going back to "change icon", the correct windows icon was displayed. I selected it and clicked "ok" and all is now correct. I don't know computers well enough to understand why this could happen, but it has happened before on this machine. The .dat files in question applied to numerous programs other than Ulead PhotoImpact???
Thanks again. As a new user of this informational site, I've already gotten good help here.

I am glad to hear you are getting the help you need.
This will happen when either a program is installed for the first time, or if its settings make it force a certain file type to be opened with the program. An example is IE. It always checks to see if its the default browser unless you tell it otherwise.
