I have a minor keyboard problem on both my pc and lap top, the " and @ characters are mixed up (@ is found on number 2 and vice versa).
does anybody have a solution it only happened since i re-installed windows 98.
Thanks
Tis very likely a problem with the keyboard layout:
Under Win98 go to Start - Setting/Control Panel and select Regional Options (not entirely sure if its called like that in Win98, but think so)
There u should have the possibility to alter the keyboard layout back to English-UK which should let the charcaters appear correctly.
Still having trouble, tried regional settings but no success, am using a kvm switch but have tried bypassing with no joy. Tried keyboard language but only have U.S english available on win 98 cd. Any other suggestions?
thanks
dave
Bad Karma[CORE] was definitely onto the right thing there - it is a Windows regional settings problem that I've seen dozens of times. The Windows 98 installation process asks you to select the correct regional settings. Most people (and even some manufacturers) just used to ignore it and leave it on US English, which results in the problem that you've got.
If you go back into Regional Settings in Control Panel, is there an option to add a new one? (sorry, I'm also not on Windows 98 and can't picture the screen at the moment).
Here's another thought - are you actually in the UK or did we just assume that incorrectly?!
Yes i'm in england, have tried regional settings and that is set to English UK, as i said i only have the option of english US keyboard layout though. One thing to consider is that, thinking about it, i noticed problems after i installed my Modem software (wanadoo adsl) though it never happened originally. I re installed windows after removing my soundcard and wanted rid of loads of unused software. prior to this there was no problems and as i say it seems to have come to light after installing my modem.
Tis a strange one me thinks.
AHA! I think I've found it. Go into Control Panel and you should find a 'Keyboard' option (at least I do on my Windows 2000 PC and I'm pretty sure that 98 is the same). Go into the Keyboard control panel applet and click on the Input Locales tab. Press the Add button and add in English (UK). Once it's added into the list, highlight it and click Set As Default. Reboot and all will be sorted
Hopefully.
Tried that, but ive only speed and language tab, the problem is that when i try add english britain to keyboard language im prompted to insert win 98 cdrom but the files required are not on the cd, bizzare. i think im gunna wipe my hard drive and install win 2000.
That will probably fix it!Originally Posted by dave71

Ah heres some summat to ponder, i had the same problem on my laptop (win 98) and when i went to adjust the keyboard layout to english britain - problem sorted it just did it. My pc asks for win 98 cd to be inserted which i do and it doesnt even try to read it. As a matter of fact it wont let me create a start up disc or anything yet i can view all files on disc, is ther somthing blocking access to my cd, you can paly music and games no probs though.?
Sorted are computers fickle or what i think i'l stick to what i know which is very little i suppose but i get by.
Thanks for all your advice.
