    Question Unknown devices...

    Hi All !!
Another quandry... Upon booting win98se I'm getting 2 "Unknown Devices" trying to install themselves - don't have a clue as to what they are. We just put in a new Gigabyte mobo (old Abit was fried - even with 3 big fans and good circulation) and we're starting with just video board so there wasn't a lot of extras to add. But every time we reboot I have to cancel out these two "unknown" installs. So my main question is, how does one find out what these unknown devices are supposed to be? Going into device manager is no help, it just shows that there are 2 "question marks" under the heading of "unknown devices" Any bits of information here would be helpful -- not a real problem, just an annoyance.
    Thanks in advance!!
    Terry

You could download aida32 from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download181.html , install and run it. Then look under computer/summary and go down the list to compare it to the device manager list.

I've had similar problems in the past and they are usually bits on the motherboard, e.g a USB controller, IR port or something like that that Windows 98 struggles to identify. If there is an install routine on the motherboard CD that allows you to install all of the available drivers for anything that might be detected, give that a go and, when you reboot, you might find that the necessary files have been copied into your Windows directory so that it can install them - some components and devices (scanners are a good example) need to have the drivers present on the PC BEFORE Windows has a go at detecting them.
