printing problems
Help, I can't seem to get my printer to print anything. It is turned on and conected to the PC by USB, but when I try to print an error say that there is no printer conected. What can I do?
-
Just to aid troubleshooting:
Which Operating System ?
Which printer ?
What applications refuse to print ?
-
My operating system is windows ME, printer is Epson photo 830U. Unfortunatly I can't print from any applications. The error reported is an error writing to EPUSB1, it also says there is a problem printing to the port. Any ideas?

Ok, can u try the following: Uninstall/Delete the printer and then reinstall it:
To delete a printer, you must have the Manage Printers permission, which is one of several printer permissions
Open Printers and Faxes
Right-click the printer you want to delete.
Click Delete.
If prompted whether you are sure you want to delete the printer, click Yes.
To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
I assume u did the normal things, like checking cables and status lights of your printer ? Any red light ?

I followed your instructions and uninstalled the printer then tried to reinstall. I got as far as being asked to select a port, default being LPT1. I chose USB not connected. I tried configure, but it reports nothing to configure. Do you think the problem may be with a lead inside the pc?
Also just discovered that I can't upload photos from a digital camera via USB port.

Any other USB devices around so you can say that USB works ok on your computer ?
Also worth checking the Device-Manager to see if there is any problem with the USB ports.
Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Hardware Tab - Device Manager
Check the USB section and let me know if that shows up ok

No USB section shows up in device manager.
-
That would explain a lot if the category USB Controller is missing from device manager.
What about other USB devices u might have at hand ? Would they work ?
As u say there is no USB listed in the device manager, we gotta go little deeper into troubleshooting now. Few questions that need to be answered:
What motherboard do you have ?
Did u check the BIOS if USB ports are enabled ?
Did the USB printer connection work before ?
As mentioned above: Other USB devices working ?
Did u install/uninstall any software/drivers lately ?

I checked the BIOS settings and found that USB was disabled! After enabling USB the printer is now working fine. I don't know how it changed, but I'm greatfull for your help tracking down the problem.
Many thanks.
