    Hi Kate,

    The preferred method for W98 involves using SFC (system file checker). See here

    I followed the instructions to the letter but a message kept saying that the file could not be found, I tried the C drive and the CD but no luck. Kate

    Hi Kate,

    Re Vserver.vxd

    On my W98SE its in Windows/options/cabs and in Windows/System. Its 111k, do you want it emailed to you? PM me if so.

    Regards,

    kate,
    The link posted above has to do with a particular vxd file. You have posted;

    "at start up message vxd not found appears."

    What is the exact error message?

    VXD files (Virtual eXtension Driver) are loaded for different things. Having the exact message or file named in the message would help a lot.

    The VMM32.vxd file is continually built upon as you load various softwares and/or add hardware to your machine etc. This file contains all the different vxd files you require. Unfortunately because of this, it can't just be "extracted" via SFC (which has bugs in it which you should be aware of), so vxd errors often require a reinstall of the O/S. (The file ~can~ be rebuilt, but it's an involved procedure not for the faint of heart.)

    For future reference, once you get your system running again, open c:\windows\scanreg.ini and place the following as the last two lines in the file;

    Files=30,config.sys,autoexec.bat,winboot.ini,io.sy s,msdos.sys
    Files=11,vmm32.vxd

    This will cause the system registry backup utility to also add these files to the backup cabs created.

    Now, what's the exact error message or exact .vxd file?

    The exact message says VxD not found, then if I click ok it goes away and computer works but some programmes do not run correctly.

    Go through the steps outlined here. Check for (FIND) vmm32.vxd as noted in method 1, and implement method 2. Post back with any results/findings.
