    Question Win98SE DOS prompts?

    Where can you easily find a simple list of MS DOS prompts along with the proper order to accomplish tasks such as: scanreg/fix, etc? I've had to restore an error-free registry twice within the past 6 months and each time, I had trouble remembering the DOS prompts. Dell Customer Service always solves the problem, but it would be nice to have the codes at hand on a printed sheet or in a file. Any advice?

    Thanks much! I'm recovering from a HIGHLY RECOMMENDED software utilities download: Advanced System Optimizer. It made changes that really screwed things up. After removing it, I had to go back to an earlier registry and I can never remember the proper command prompts or the order in which you must use them. A simple guide would help a lot.

    Simple guide in a nutshell;

    Boot to RAW DOS.

    When you start the system, just after the POST (Power On Self Test) screen you'll see "Starting Windows 9x". Start tapping either the Ctrl or F8 key. (You have to be quick.) You should get the MS Startup Menu. * - See below.

    Choose "Command prompt only".

    When you get to the C:\> prompt, type in;

    scanreg/restore

    or

    scanreg /restore (some systems like the space before "/restore")

    Choose a date preceeding your problem.

    NOTE: This operation should be performed once only. (I've posted this in forums and had one user do it for all the dates listed. This is not good generally.)

    * As an alternate to getting the MS Startup menu;
    If you can get into windows (in either Safe Mode or regular mode), you can invoke the startup menu at each boot by;

    Start/Run type in: msconfig.
    Near the bottom right of the General tab, click on Advanced.
    Place a checkmark in the box titled: Enable Startup Menu.
    The startup menu will be presented at each boot.
    To remove this option, reverse the above steps.
