    Fatal exception messages

    Hello all,
I have two (well, at least two, maybe more) problems I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on to help me get things straightened out.

I have an HP Pavilion 8560c (500mhz Celeron processor, 12 gig HD, 256 megs RAM) running Windows 98se.

Last year I got a new computer so I took the HP out of service. After several months of not being used, I decided to hook it up again so my young daughter could play games on it, and I could have something to get online with if my wife was using my new computer. The first time I turned it on, I got a message that there were Windows critical updates available, so I went to the Microsoft site, downloaded and installed them.

When I restarted it, it went through the standard startup routine, but a few seconds after the desktop appeared, I got a fatal exception message. Using directions I found on this forum (thanks!) I went back and restored the previous version of the registry, and it started OK. I figured that while I was working on it, I'd run scandisk and defrag. I had earlier experienced similar problems as someone else here on this forum had - scandisk and defrag that never finish - so once again, following directions I found here, I restarted in safe mode, and ran both utilities.

When I restarted again, I experienced the same problem as before - a few seconds after the desktop appeared, I got a fatal error message. This time there were two messages, the second one appearing after I hit ctrl-alt-del. This time, I'm unable to restart with ctrl-alt-del like I was doing before. It's just locked up, and the only way to restart is to hold the power switch for a few seconds until it shuts down, then let it sit for a while, then turn it on again.

The blue screen messages I get are:

Fatal exception 06 has occurred at 0000:00000063

Fatal exception 06 has occurred at 3E73:00003427

Can anyone help me get this thing running again? It seems like I've reconfigured something that is causing the problems, but I've spent a few hours re-tracing my steps now and can't get back to where I started.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Scott

I see these issues Re: Fatal 06 in 98:

Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Program and remove the last two critical
    updates:

    Microsoft 98 Q891711
    Microsoft 98 Q888113

    Reboot your machine.

Also remove: KB891711 (if you have it) Re:

    KB891711

If you go online after removing these updates please use a firewall!
