sorry about the delay... juggling between two computers, the one i'm trying to fix and the one that i'm typing on now. here is the info found under the display tab:

    Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
    Manufacturer: (standard display types)
    Display Mode: 640X480 (4 bit)

    Drivers
    VGA.drv
    Certified: Yes
    VDD: *vdd

anything else you need from the dxdiag?

Have you checked the device manager
clicked on the graphics adapter & tried to update drivers?

here is a version of VGA.drv

I dont know if it is an upgrade of yours or just the same:

    VGA.drv

you can try to login as:
    user: drivers
    password: all

or else go thru the free registration.

i have tried to update the driver and it states that the driver already installed is the best one the computer can find... too bad it only has 2 and 16 colors!

i will attempt to download the driver you've specified and let you know. thanks

Here is a quote from DAL's DJNafey
You're PC hasn't been given (or doesn't remember being given) the correct driver files for your graphics card. Therefore, it's just using the built-in standard VGA driver. The VGA driver only supports 640x480 pixels and 16 colours.

You need to obtain the latest driver files for your SiS graphics chip. Note that you don't actually have a separate graphics card in your PC. The graphics chip is "on-board", which means that it's built into the motherboard (you'll notice that the monitor connector on the back of the PC is in a bank of on-board sockets along with the keyboard, mouse, etc., rather than being in one of the slots towards the base of the PC).

In order to determine which driver files to get, you must first confirm exactly what graphics chip model you've got. It will be something like "SiS 620 on-board 4Mb AGP graphics controller v1.7". Running Aida32 should hopefully give you that precise information.

Alternatively, you might be lucky if you run Windows Update which will looks for driver updates as well as those important security fixes for Windows.
Aida32 is now known as Everest & can be found here:

Here is the SiS site if you find specific specs:

regarding the downloads at the SiS website, should i download the chipset software, IGP graphics drivers, or GPU graphics driver? thanks... i think i'm almost there!

by the way, here are the cpu's specs:
    MB chipset SiS 530
    Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
    3D accel. SiS 86C306

The IGP SiS 530 would be the general driver & is available from the above SiS link.

The GPU 86c306 is specifically for 3D acceleration & I don't see it listed at SiS but did find it here:

    86c306

    again:
    user: drivers
    password: all
    this is a .rar file

I would try the first first & see if that gets you going.

The system is using the generic video driver. Please install video driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.
DirectDraw test results: Failure at step 3 (DirectDrawCreate): HRESULT = 0x887600de (No DirectDraw support)
Direct3D functionality not available. You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer.
